The story kicks off on Ocean Drive in Miami, Florida, where a vibrant flash mob known as The Mob takes center stage. They create a spectacle by stopping traffic with their vintage convertibles while dancing on the cars to the infectious beats spun by DJ Penelope (Cleopatra Coleman). As hours pass, the leaders of the Mob—Sean (Ryan Guzman), Eddie ([Misha Gabriel]), and Jason ([Stephen “Twitch” Boss])—witness their latest performance broadcast on television from the restaurant kitchen where they work. Reactions are mixed: some disapprove of the disruption, while others are thrilled by it.
Once their shift ends, the trio sneaks into the lavish Dimont Hotel’s beach club, posing as guests. Meanwhile, at the bar, Emily (Kathryn McCormick) tries in vain to catch the waiter’s eye but ends up mixing her own drink. Sensing a spark, Sean requests a beer from her, and they quickly fall into an impromptu dance-off on the beach. However, Emily bolts when her father’s colleague, Trip, shows up unexpectedly.
The following day reveals tension at breakfast between Emily and her father, Bill Anderson ([Peter Gallagher]). Recognizing her from the previous night, Sean inadvertently causes a mishap with some orange juice, prompting an angry outburst from Emily. Their connection deepens when she performs an energetic contemporary dance, initially unaware of Sean’s admiring gaze. After a brief conversation, Emily reveals her aspirations to audition for the esteemed Winwood Dance Academy, already a part of its circle but struggling with the constraints of their choreography rules. Sean encourages her to think outside those constraints, leading her to a hidden world: the Miami Museum of Fine Arts, where the Mob performs, bringing art to life through dance.
Emily seeks acceptance into the Mob’s next flash mob, which aims to entertain a restaurant crowd and even win a contest for viral views on YouTube. Although initially met with skepticism by Eddie, Emily impresses during the mob performance, strengthening her bond with Sean. Their chemistry is palpable as they share a romantic moment aboard a boat, but upon returning to reality, they face a harsh truth—Emily’s father plans to construct a development project that threatens Sean’s home and business.
Determined to protest, Emily rallies the Mob, leading to their dance gaining substantial traction online. However, conflict arises when Eddie discovers Emily’s true identity as Bill’s daughter, leading to tensions and ruptured relationships. After a confrontation with Bill, Emily’s connection with Sean and the Mob crumbles, and her solo audition fails to meet expectations.
In a twist of fate, after Eddie and Sean are bailed out of jail, they unite the Mob for one final protest performance. This time, they stand for those who lack a voice, pulling in familiar faces from previous Step Up films for added star power. Emily and Sean reconcile, performing their original duet that captures their essence and passion for dance. As the finale unfolds, Bill is moved by his daughter’s resolve, leading him to reconsider his intentions. The film concludes with Sean and Emily sharing a passionate kiss, ready to embrace a future together, while Eddie and Sean solidify opportunities for the Mob to dance in prestigious commercials. The screen lights up with a montage of dazzling dance sequences from the film, celebrating their journey together.
