Following an eventful party, brothers Mac (Damaine Radcliff) and Skinny Carter (De’Shawn Washington), along with their friend Tyler Gage (Channing Tatum), find themselves breaking into the Maryland School of Arts, wreaking havoc in the theatre and causing damage to various props. When a security guard catches them, Tyler makes the selfless decision to take the blame, resulting in a sentence of 200 hours of community service at the very school where the incident occurred.
While fulfilling his sentence, he accidentally stumbles upon a dance class and is captivated by Nora Clark (Jenna Dewan), a talented student who is striving to perfect her routine for the crucial “senior showcase.” This performance could be her gateway to joining a professional dance company. One day, while Tyler is rehearsing with his friends, he unwittingly draws Nora’s attention as he blends break-dance moves with ballet steps he recently learned.
Nora faces an unexpected challenge when her dance partner, Andrew (Tim Lacatena), injures himself, leaving her partnerless for her routine. Although she auditions several students to fill in, none meet her standards. Tyler offers his assistance, but Nora is hesitant at first. However, after witnessing his impressive ability to lift her in a supported leap, she reconsiders and persuades Director Gordon (Rachel Griffiths) to allow Tyler to dance with her.
Initially, Tyler is confrontational towards both Nora and her boyfriend, Brett (Josh Henderson), but as they practice together, they not only teach each other about their different dance styles but also build a deeper connection. Meanwhile, Tyler befriends Miles (Mario), a musician at the school who is harboring feelings for Nora’s friend, Lucy (Drew Sidora).
As Nora and Tyler’s relationship deepens, she reveals to him a cherished location on the waterfront where she envisioned her routine—a place connected to her late father’s workplace. She discloses that her original vision for the dance was to include an ensemble rather than just a duet. Inspired by her dream, Tyler begins recruiting younger dancers from the school to join her performance. However, tensions rise when Brett’s ambition leads him to betray Miles after sealing a recording deal, prompting Nora to end her relationship with him.
As Tyler strives to balance his newfound aspirations, friendships, and his increasingly strained relationship with old friends, he seeks permission from Director Gordon to enroll in the school. She tells him he must prove his commitment, which leads Nora to suggest that the upcoming showcase could serve as his audition.
The two bond further at a club where Lucy and Miles perform, marking the beginning of a romantic relationship between Nora and Tyler. However, rehearsals hit a snag when Andrew recovers from his injury, leaving Tyler feeling like he no longer belongs in the routine. Hurt and feeling unappreciated, he quits, reverting to his janitorial duties as part of his community service.
Despite his absence, Nora incorporates Tyler’s suggestions into her choreography, but soon realizes that Andrew cannot handle the new complexity. Heartbroken and questioning her future in dance, she receives a heartfelt pep talk from her mother, who once opposed her dreams. Renewed, Nora adapts the routine into a solo performance.
Tragedy strikes when Tyler’s friend Skinny is killed during an incident involving a stolen car, prompting both Tyler and Mac to reflect on their paths in life. On the night of the showcase, Tyler surprises Nora with his presence and implores her to let him join her performance, asking for her forgiveness. Initially reluctant, she ultimately changes her mind and wishes him good luck as he steps away.
As the curtain rises, Tyler, Nora, and the group perform their unique choreography accompanied by Miles’ captivating music. The performance leaves the audience in awe and a proud Director Gordon excitedly informs another director from a professional dance company that Tyler is a “transfer student.” Overwhelmed with emotion, Nora hugs Tyler and echoes the advice she once shared with him, culminating in a heartfelt kiss between them.
