Stage Fright

Eve Gill is introduced as an aspiring actress attending rehearsals at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. During one of these sessions, her focus is abruptly interrupted by a frantic visit from her friend, Jonathan, an actor with whom she shares a secret attraction.

Jonathan Cooper urgently confides in Eve about a dire situation involving his lover, Charlotte Inwood. He claims Charlotte visited him after allegedly killing her husband during a heated argument, wearing a bloodstained dress.

Upon visiting Charlotte's house, Jonathan finds the body of Mr. Inwood and attempts to stage a burglary to cover the incident. However, his actions attract the attention of Charlotte's maid, Nellie Goode, putting him at risk of arrest.

Determined to assist Jonathan, Eve brings him to her father's coastal house for refuge. Her father, Commodore Gill, notices the inconsistencies in Jonathan's story, leading them to suspect that he may have been framed for murder.

Taking matters into her own hands, Eve disguises herself as a reporter to gather information about the murder. She successfully bribes Nellie Goode to take leave, allowing her to infiltrate Charlotte's household as a maid.

While working undercover, Eve encounters Detective Inspector Wilfred Smith. Despite the professional nature of their meeting, an undeniable attraction develops between them, complicating Eve's secret mission.

Eve invites Smith for tea at her home, introducing him to her mother and Commodore Gill. Subtle hints are dropped regarding Jonathan's whereabouts, all while Eve struggles to maintain her dual identity.

In spite of the chaos surrounding her, Charlotte returns to perform in her West End musical. During this time, Jonathan clandestinely confronts Charlotte, urging her to escape with him, but she refuses, prioritizing her career.

Eve continues to assist Jonathan in evading the police, which leads to him hiding at her family's London residence. Their time together deepens Eve's feelings for him, complicating her emotions further.

After discovering Eve's deception, Nellie threatens to expose her, but Eve successfully manages to buy her silence. This confrontation heightens the tension as Smith becomes increasingly suspicious.

Eve persuades Smith to attend a garden party where Charlotte performs. During the show, an orchestrated spectacle involving a doll stained with blood shocks Charlotte, causing her to lose her composure.

After the performance, Eve confronts Charlotte, in the presence of Smith and his team, using a hidden microphone to capture a confession. Charlotte admits to her involvement in the events leading to her husband's death, further complicating matters.

As the situation escalates, Jonathan is revealed to have hidden near the theatre. However, overwhelmed by emotions, Eve creates a diversion, enabling him to escape amidst the chaos caused by police intervention.

In a tense moment below the stage, Jonathan confesses to Eve that he was manipulated by Charlotte into committing murder. As he struggles with his mental state, Eve attempts to convince him to surrender before tragedy unfolds.

In the ensuing chaos, as Jonathan tries to escape, he is caught by the stage's safety curtain. As Eve grapples with the aftermath of the events, Smith offers her comfort, hinting at what could have been in another reality.
