As the scorching summer sun casts its heat upon the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Ray Aibelli finds himself at a crossroads. He is torn between fulfilling a prestigious medical internship and caring for his ailing mother, Susan, who is struggling with a leg injury that has rendered her homebound. Compounding the situation is the impending departure of his father, Tom, a salesman heading off on an extended business trip, leaving Susan feeling neglected and emotionally stranded due to Tom’s infidelities.

Taking on the role of primary caregiver, Ray discovers an unexpected emotional bond with his mother, which begins to blur the lines of their relationship. During a seemingly innocuous moment while helping her with her shower routine, Ray becomes acutely aware of an inappropriate attraction to Susan, culminating in a moment of intense connection when he inadvertently massages her thigh. This encounter ignites feelings of guilt and self-loathing, causing Ray to grapple with his emotions.

Struggling with sexual frustration and feeling increasingly isolated from his high school circle, who are too engrossed in their own trivial pursuits to provide genuine support, Ray attempts to fill the void by entering a relationship with local teenager Toni Peck. Unfortunately, his struggles with emotional and physical communication lead to her rejection, further deepening his sense of isolation.

In his loneliness, Ray turns to Susan, confiding in her about his failed romance. Their conversations deepen their already complex relationship, though they also blur the lines of normalcy. Just as Ray receives an opportunity to escape his familial obligations when Aunt Helen offers to take over as caretaker, he finds himself once again enveloped in an intense moment of intimacy with his mother. This encounter significantly impacts his life; missing the bus to M.I.T. the following day leaves him in a precarious situation regarding his future, especially after Tom informs him that he can no longer support his tuition.

Amidst rekindled illicit feelings, Ray and Toni share passionate moments, only to be brutally interrupted by Susan’s sudden entrance. This confrontation escalates into a chaotic argument, leaving Toni emotionally devastated and seeking comfort in her father, who finds himself distracted by Susan’s unexpected flirtations.

In a moment of despair, Ray contemplates ending his life by hanging himself in the bathroom. However, Susan’s timely intervention rescues him just in time, leading to a wave of frustration and rage directed at her. Although their sexual contact begins with passion, it dangerously teeters on violent impulses. Ultimately, Ray’s more destructive desires are quelled when he receives an invitation from friends, offering a fleeting escape from his turmoil.

When he joins his friends near the river, he inadvertently falls victim to his emotional state, culminating in a reckless decision to jump off a cliff in a moment of extreme agitation. The morning after reveals Ray hitchhiking with a truck driver, his mind in a tumult of confusion and fear, wondering what lies ahead in the wake of his chaotic upheaval.
