Believing death is the fate he deserves, Mitch refuses to flee and instead follows the creatures to a nearby motel, where he enters room 6255. He finds himself inside a home he recognizes and, hearing his daughter's voice, follows the sounds to an apparition of Katherine who begs for his help. Yet whenever he moves closer, she continues to run away. Trapped in the hallway of the house, Mitch is tormented until death by the regret that he was never able to help his daughter.

  4. The White Tights Break Down

At the same motel are Sadie, Ava, and Kim, traveling musicians in a band called The White Tights. After leaving the motel to visit landmarks while stalked by the floating creatures, their van's tire goes flat and they are forced to pull over. Stranded in the middle of the desert, they are picked up by a friendly, eccentric couple, and Sadie notices a bear trap in the backseat of their car.

  5. A Sinister Welcome

The band is taken to the couple's house, where Sadie hears the woman mention their late friend Alex, though neither Ava nor Kim seems to notice. At dinner with the Kensingtons, who live nearby with their twin sons, they are served burnt roast beef, which Sadie, a vegetarian, politely declines. Before eating, the two families recite a strange, seemingly satanic prayer. Afterward, Kim begins to blame Sadie for Alex's death, and Ava and Kim suddenly begin vomiting a black substance, which the residents treat with a white liquid medicine.

Waking up in the middle of the night, she finds Ava and Kim gone and discovers them around a bonfire, participating in a strange cult ritual with the others in the house. Investigating from bushes nearby, her foot becomes caught in the bear trap she saw in the couple's car. 7. A Cruel Twist of Fate

Terrified, Sadie runs out into the road and hails an approaching car for help, only to be run over in a cruel twist of fate. 8. An Abandoned Hospital

A certified EMT joins the 911 line to help, and the dispatcher and EMT direct Lucas to drive Sadie to a nearby town, where he finds a medical facility. With no help to be found, the dispatcher decides to guide Lucas through performing lifesaving surgery over the phone, and a third voice, that of a doctor, gets on the line.

    Where
An abandoned medical facility in a nearby town
  9. The Impossible 'Surgery'

The voices convince Lucas to painfully wrap a tourniquet around Sadie's almost severed leg, insert a tube into her throat so she can breathe, and cut into her rib cage to manually compress her lungs, a procedure that finally kills her. The voices begin to laugh at Lucas, who hangs up and finds every door of the hospital locked. When his phone rings again, the dispatchers persuade him to talk about the incident, agree that he did not deserve this, and tell him he can leave. They provide him with clean clothes and a new car so it seems as though nothing happened, and a hesitant Lucas drives away past one of the floating creatures watching from the edge of the road.

  10. Demons at The Trap

Sandy, the dispatcher who guided Lucas, watches him drive away from a nearby payphone before walking into a bar named The Trap, just as Danny arrives across the parking lot. Danny barges in with a shotgun, demanding to know the location of his sister. Patron Warren is revealed to be a demon who cuts a gash into Danny's back, and Danny retaliates by blowing off Warren's clawed hand with the shotgun. Danny then takes bartender Al hostage and forces him to drive toward his sister's location.

  11. The Secret Back Room

Through the tattoo in his own hand, Al can see demons closing in on Danny as he leads him through a secret entrance into a hidden room behind an ice cream parlor. Inside, Danny finds his sister Jesse applying a tattoo, similar to the one on Al's hand, to a patron's back, but she insists she is there by choice and refuses to leave. Danny kills Al and kidnaps Jesse, carrying her to his car as the demon locals chase him as he drives quickly away.

  12. Into the Desert

The pair drives for some time until the road peters out into the desert, where the car shakes violently after Danny decides, with the locals in pursuit, that he has no other option but to leave the road. Jesse finally reveals that she killed their parents and that she deserves to live in the town. The demons pull Danny out of the car and strip him, and Jesse leaves him behind, driving away with a smile and the radio on as a floating creature oversees her plight in the moonlight.

  13. One Last Weekend, Interrupted

At Freez'n Over, Jem exits the bathroom and sees Jesse walk back to the secret door before rejoins her parents, Cait and Daryl, for their last weekend together before she leaves for college. As the family drives to their vacation house, someone in the parking lot watches them. Just as they are about to have dinner, three masked men break into the house, catching Daryl and Cait while Jem hides. 14. Jem's Last Stand

Jem stabs one of the masked men in the back with scissors and takes the bat he was holding, but the other two surprisingly tell her to leave before they kill Daryl, holding up the photograph of Katherine so it is the last thing he ever sees. The killers remove their masks and are revealed to be Mitch and Jack, who feel guilty for going too far. When Jem returns to fight back, she injures the men badly, but Mitch kills her before she can escape.

    Where
    The family's vacation house
  15. Creatures from Below and the Time Loop

Outside, the ground opens up and the enigmatic floating creatures emerge through the dead bodies, dragging the third masked man down with tentacles from beneath the Earth. Mitch and Jack drive away, and when one of the creatures chases them, Jack accelerates and runs it down. Back on the highway, Jack declares they are going home while Mitch looks at the photograph of Katherine and glimpses the creatures stalking them without telling Jack. Repeating the scenes that opened the film, the segments end in a cyclical fashion, revealing that the entire story is a time loop.

Curated lists built around what makes Southbound tick: the same mood, the same kind of story or the same emotional payoff. Each list explains why these movies belong together.

Movies Like Southbound: Interconnected Tales on a Deadly Highway

Separate journeys collide at a remote stop, where isolation becomes deadly. Fans of movies like Southbound will find dark anthology horror in which separate travelers and crises converge along an isolated highway. These stories favor remote roadside locations, supernatural menace, graphic violence, and revelations that reconnect every strand into one bleak, nightmarish whole.

  • ominous
  • nightmarish
  • isolated
  • claustrophobic
  • relentless
  • bleak
  • Tone: dark, ominous, nightmarish
  • Pacing: variable, atmospheric to frantic
Why these movies?

The story pattern: Several seemingly unrelated travelers encounter accidents, intrusions, and other inexplicable crises on the same remote route. Their stories expand, overlap, and converge at a central stop, allowing a shared supernatural pattern to emerge. Atmospheric pauses give way to sudden violence, while a final revelation links the incidents and transforms isolated episodes into a single cycle of doom.

Why they belong together: These films share a segmented structure, an isolated travel setting, multiple converging crises, and a malevolent force that connects otherwise separate stories. Slow, uneasy setups repeatedly erupt into graphic violence, and the closing revelation recontextualizes the entire journey, producing a bleak and tightly interwoven nightmare.

Movies Like Southbound: Grief, Regret, and Unescapable Supernatural Fate

Guilt and grief draw characters into a relentless cycle of supernatural punishment. If you liked Southbound, explore movies where grief, regret, and guilt feed an inescapable supernatural threat. Characters are cornered by tragic choices and cruel forces, while cyclical endings reveal that escape may be impossible, leaving violence, despair, and moral punishment at the heart of the story.

  • grief-stricken
  • hopeless
  • nightmarish
  • relentless
  • bleak
  • surreal
  • Tone: bleak, grievous, relentlessly ominous
  • Pacing: variable, building to frantic violence
Why these movies?

The story pattern: Characters shaped by grief or remorse become entangled with a malevolent force that turns their worst failures into punishment. Each attempt to flee, resist, or survive exposes them to further suffering, and the apparent path toward safety collapses. The closing revelation reveals a recurring fate, leaving the characters trapped in a moral and supernatural loop without meaningful redemption.

Why they belong together: These movies share a mournful emotional arc in which grief and guilt deepen into dread, helplessness, and despair. Relentless supernatural violence repeatedly removes any sense of escape, while cyclical endings suggest that the characters are undergoing repeated punishment. Their bleakness comes from both personal tragedy and the collapse of every remaining hope.
