The movie opens with the iconic phrase, 'A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...' This sets the stage for a story unfolding in the chaotic early years of the First Galactic Empire, highlighting the lawlessness following the fall of the Galactic Republic.

On the industrial world of Corellia, Han and his girlfriend Qi'ra navigate a dangerous environment ruled by Lady Proxima and her White Worms gang. Proxima relentlessly seeks coaxium, a precious hyperfuel, while Han dreams of escaping this perilous life.

In their desperate attempt to escape Corellia, Han successfully acquires some coaxium, but their plan is thwarted by Proxima’s henchmen. Using quick thinking, Han feigns using a thermal detonator, creating a distraction that allows them a narrow escape.

As they flee, the couple finds themselves cornered, and despite Han's efforts, Qi'ra is captured and left behind. Han, now separated from his love, vows to return for her, igniting a sense of determination and hope in his heart.

Three years later, Han finds himself as a soldier on the foggy planet Mimban after being expelled from the Imperial Flight Academy. During a fierce battle, he encounters Tobias Beckett and his crew, who are posing as Imperial troops amidst the chaos.

After being initially rebuffed by Beckett, Han faces betrayal and is captured by Imperial forces. However, in a twist of fate, he encounters Chewbacca, and the two form an alliance to escape captivity together, solidifying a partnership that will last.

Han and his new allies plan a risky heist on the snow-covered planet Vandor, aiming to steal coaxium from a train. Their mission quickly turns disastrous when they are ambushed by the Cloud Riders, resulting in tragic losses for the crew.

After the failed heist, Han offers his skills to Beckett for another mission, leading them to the infamous crime lord Dryden Vos. Their new objective is to secure another shipment of coaxium, showing Han's willingness to delve deeper into the criminal underworld.

At Dryden Vos's lavish party, Han encounters Qi'ra again, who has become embroiled in the criminal underbelly. They develop a daring plan to extract unrefined coaxium from the treacherous mines on Kessel, setting the stage for a high-stakes mission.
