Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

The movie opens with the iconic text: A LONG TIME AGO IN A GALAXY FAR FAR AWAY…, but swiftly transitions into the heart of the action, skipping the traditional introduction. In the early days of the Galactic Empire, an Imperial ship makes its descent onto the planet Lah’mu. Young Jyn Erso (Beau Gadsdon) witnesses this and rushes to alert her father, Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen), and her mother, Lyra Erso ([Valene Kane]). Fearing for their safety, Lyra contacts Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), warning him that “He’s come for us.” In a poignant farewell, Galen lovingly bids Jyn goodbye, referring to her as “Stardust,” and bravely confronts the Empire alone, while Jyn and her mother retreat into the hills.

As tensions rise, Lyra sacrifices herself in an attempt to protect her family, ultimately confronting Orson Krennic ([Ben Mendelsohn]), who menaces them at their home. Young Jyn witnesses this horror but manages to escape and is later rescued by Saw. Fast forward fifteen years, and we find a grown-up Jyn (Felicity Jones) imprisoned in the Ring of Kafrene. Meanwhile, the Rebel Alliance, led by Mon Mothma ([Genevieve O’Reilly]), discusses the Empire’s terrifying plans to create a superweapon capable of annihilating entire planets.

On the desert world of Jedha, Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed), an Imperial pilot seeking redemption, is captured. As Jyn is being transferred, Rebel troops launch a daring rescue. In the chaos, she initially resists but is soon confronted by K-2SO (Alan Tudyk), a re-purposed Imperial droid who has become an ally to the Rebels.

Reunited on the moon Yavin 4, Jyn learns more about the significance of her father’s work and the extremist Saw, who holds crucial information about the Empire. An alliance forms—Jyn reluctantly agrees to assist the Rebels in locating Saw, and ultimately, her father. Their mission leads them to Jedha, where they encounter Saw, who is now severely altered and suspicious of Bodhi. In a tense moment, he introduces Bodhi to a terrifying Bor Gullet, a creature that can probe minds.

Meanwhile, Krennic and Grand Moff Tarkin ([Guy Henry]) plot the test of their superweapon, and tragedy strikes when the Death Star unleashes its destructive power upon Jedha, obliterating it. As Saw Gerrera sacrifices himself, urging Jyn to fight for her father, the remaining Rebels regroup. They learn of the Death Star’s plans hidden within its datastores—a mission that Jyn proposes, believing that “rebellions are built on hope.”

Devising a plan, the crew adopts the name “Rogue One” and heads to Scarif to extract the plans. Battling through intense Imperial opposition, the team faces devastating losses, notably the brave sacrifices of Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) and K-2SO, who selflessly defends his friends.

Jyn and Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) make a daring climb to transmit the Death Star plans, but face dire moments when Krennic confronts them. Just as Jyn initiates the transmission, the weight of the Empire looms over them; the sheer determination of the Rebel forces shines bright as they stage a moving rescue, leading to an exhilarating battle in space.

In a climactic revelation, as the plans are shared, we witness the tragic fate of Jyn and Cassian, who find solace in each other’s company during the imminent obliteration of Scarif. Meanwhile, the data card makes its way to Princess Leia (Ingvild Deila) aboard the Tantive IV, signifying that although they may perish, the spark of hope ignites the Rebellion, setting the stage for the fight against tyranny to continue.
