Legend of the Lost

Dita, a woman with a checkered past, becomes infatuated with Paul Bonnard and his willingness to overlook her history. She is drawn to his acceptance of her and insists on accompanying the journey, despite Joe's strong objections to her joining.

Earlier, Joe expresses reluctance about the entire expedition, foreshadowing the dangers that lie ahead for anyone who joins.

The three skeletons, one woman and two men, discovered at the well reveal that Paul's father had found the city before. He killed the woman (presumably his lover) and his guide, then killed himself, likely to protect his claim of having discovered the treasure.

Paul discovers that his father, whom he idolized and sought to prove right, was capable of murder and ultimately took his own life. This reveals his father was not the heroic figure Paul believed in, but a man who killed in cold blood and then committed suicide to escape the consequences.

Paul's obsessive need to prove his late father's claim drives the entire expedition, making this revelation a devastating blow to his identity.

Joe deciphers clues left by Paul's father in his Bible, which leads him to locate the buried treasure within the ruins of the ancient city. The clues were hidden in religious text, requiring someone with Joe's experience and attention to detail to solve.

After his seduction attempt on Dita fails and he loses the confrontation with Joe, Paul acts out of spite and greed. He steals the animals, supplies, and the treasure under cover of night, leaving Joe and Dita to die in the desert rather than share the wealth or acknowledge his defeat.

Paul's volatile and dangerous nature was revealed during his confrontation with Joe earlier that night.

When Paul regains consciousness, he finds Joe and Dita digging for water. Rather than accept help or share the treasure, Paul buries it again and launches a desperate knife attack on Joe, attempting to kill them both and keep the treasure for himself.

Paul's earlier theft and abandonment demonstrated his willingness to commit violence for the treasure.

Dita shoots and kills Paul because he is attacking Joe with a knife while they are already weakened from dehydration and exhaustion. The attack is life-threatening, and Dita acts to protect Joe from being killed by Paul's desperate violent act.

Just as a caravan appears on the horizon, Joe and Dita are rescued from the desert. The caravan arrives in the nick of time, pulling them from their ordeal and providing salvation after their grueling journey and violent confrontation.
