Olivia tends to malarial patients on the lower decks of the ship as it sails from the West Indies to Liverpool. She meets the suave Mark Bellis, who has fallen ill himself, and their initial encounter seeds a wary but growing rapport.

Fully recovered, Mark persuades Olivia to allow him to live in her inherited lodging house. They begin a cautious, mutually beneficial association as he settles in. Olivia remains wary but intrigued by his presence.

Mark uses his charm to seduce Olivia while also charming Kitty, drawing both women into his orbit. Olivia becomes more drawn to him despite her better judgment. Kitty remains an ongoing distraction for Mark.

Mark's past as an art thief and forger is revealed when he reunites with Edgar Bellamy. They plan a daring heist, and their scheme leads to a rooftop escape as police close in.

Henry Courtney grows exasperated with Susan and plots to have her committed, hiring a private detective to trace the missing securities. The detective builds a dossier on Mark, revealing his criminal past.

Henry confronts Olivia with the new evidence, and a struggle ensues. During the chaos, Henry collapses from a heart attack, intensifying the crisis surrounding the household.

Olivia releases Susan and tricks her into giving Henry a dose of medicine laced with poison. Henry dies, the police are summoned, and Susan appears incoherent but mutters a murder-like confession as she is taken away.

Mark announces his intention to take Olivia away to America, beyond British prosecution. Olivia, increasingly estranged from him, grapples with her conscience and the damage she has done.

Olivia encounters Kitty wearing the incriminating locket and realizes Mark has manipulated her all along. In a final act of revenge, she fatally stabs Mark in a hansom cab before turning herself in at the police station.
