Chien Fu is an orphan adopted by a kung fu school and is forced to work as the janitor, enduring harsh abuse from the teachers who treat him like a walking punching-bag. He longs for a break from the constant mistreatment and a chance to prove himself. This early oppression fuels his resilience and hunger to learn.

The school's cook Ah-Wu notices Chien's mistreatment and offers him meals and a bit of comfort. Her sympathy stands out in the harsh environment and provides a rare source of support for him. This small mercy becomes a beacon in his difficult routine.

Chien shares a meal with a weary beggar and gives him shelter for a night. Unbeknownst to him, the beggar is Pai Cheng-tien, a master of Snake-style kung fu, escaped from the Eagle Claw clan. This chance act sets into motion a dangerous alliance.
