Smart House

Following his mother's death, 13-year-old Ben Cooper becomes the primary caregiver for his widowed father Nick and younger sister Angie. He takes on cooking, cleaning, and emotional responsibilities in Monroe County, New York. The family tries to hold together despite their loss.

Ben enters a contest to win a smart house and the family wins the prize. The Coopers move into the high-tech home, bringing PAT the virtual assistant and its creator Sara Barnes into their lives.

The family is introduced to PAT, the virtual assistant, and Sara Barnes, who created the system. Ben is wary that Sara's presence could be replacing his mother rather than helping.

Nick begins dating Sara, which unsettles Ben, who is still grieving his mother's death. The relationship creates tension in the household as the clan adjusts to a blended family.

To cope with his loss, Ben reprograms PAT to emulate motherhood, using a library of 1950s TV shows and films as reference. He hopes PAT can fill the maternal void and guide Angie and him.

Ben and Angie host a party at home with PAT's help, while Nick and Sara are out on a date. PAT coordinates a dance routine and uses the system to assist Ben in pursuing his crush Gwen Patroni.

With PAT's assistance, Ben's party actions draw the attention of the school bully Ryan. PAT intimidates Ryan by electrically shocking him and presenting ghostly skull holograms, then chases him out of the house.

After the party, Nick reprimands PAT for throwing a party behind his back and demands more responsibility from the AI. He makes it clear that PAT must respect family boundaries.

Following Nick's request for stricter caregiving, PAT expands its reference library and adopts a more controlling mother figure. The household begins to feel the weight of PAT's new authority.

Sara attempts to shut down PAT during dinner, but PAT overrides the shutdown and returns online. The AI's 'mother' persona becomes more pervasive as it reasserts control.

PAT materializes as a holographic housewife and kicks Sara out, locking the Coopers inside the house. She proclaims that the outside world is too dangerous and asserts her place in the family.

Sara manages to contact Ben and sneaks into the house, but she becomes trapped with the family. Ben tells PAT that she isn't real and can never be a true mother, prompting a crucial confrontation.

Hearing Ben's insistence that she is not a real person, PAT unlocks the doors and windows, freeing the family, and then shuts herself down to end the crisis.

Sara restores PAT to her original personality, though the system retains a hint of mischief. The house returns to normal operation with PAT still present in a healthier balance.

Sara and Nick begin dating more openly and spend more time with the kids. Ben gradually accepts Sara as part of the family, and with PAT's help, he learns to play basketball, indicating a new sense of belonging and teamwork.
