Artie Sawyer is a World War II veteran who has been laid off from his factory job, and the strain of work troubles weighs on his relationship with his wife, Iris Sawyer. He accepts a job as the superintendent of a New York apartment building, trying to keep life steady in a difficult period. One night, with Iris away, he goes to a bar and meets a pretty young woman named Claudine who is looking for an apartment. She seduces him, and he is drawn into her orbit, though her attentions are not what they seem. Claudine’s true partner in crime emerges: her sadistic boyfriend Billy and his Army buddies, Riff and Virgil, to use Artie’s building as a staging ground for a bank robbery next door.

Artie arrives at the scene with a wary mind, sensing trouble as the group settles in, yet they promise to leave as soon as possible and keep their visit discreet, a lie that allows him to keep Iris in the dark. Feeling torn between loyalty and conscience, Artie agrees to let them stay temporarily, worried that exposing his relationship with Claudine could ruin his fragile marriage. The tension escalates as Artie’s curiosity grows; one night, he sneaks into apartment 7A while the conspirators are away, discovering their plan to rob the bank.

Caught in the act, Artie is restrained by Virgil and held until Billy and Claudine return. The stakes escalate when Billy orders Virgil and Riff to seize Iris, so Iris and Artie find themselves tied up in 7A, trapped until the robbery concludes. The sequence moves quickly toward chaos: the bank robbery is interrupted by a police siege, and Virgil is killed in a volley of gunfire. Billy blames Riff for a faulty bomb that was meant to open the bank vault, blaming him for the setback.

Desperate to escape, Billy forces Riff to plant a second bomb, this time in the elevator of the apartment building. Iris is compelled to tell the police that Billy will detonate the device if they do not grant the thieves safe passage. Claudine finds herself torn between fear and guilt over the violence she has drawn into, openly resisting Billy’s plans, though she is mocked and ultimately left behind with an uncertain fate.

Billy and Riff seize Artie as a hostage, and the elevator becomes a pressure cooker of fear and bravado. In a tense exchange, Billy berates Riff for the earlier failure, while Riff argues that the second bomb could still save them. The struggle ends with Billy shooting Riff in the shoulder and taking control of the situation. Artie manages to seize Billy’s two-way radio and climbs to the top of the elevator where the bomb lies. The police guide him through disarming the device, and he succeeds in saving the building and everyone inside.

In the aftermath, Artie confesses his indiscretion to Iris, and the couple reconciles, choosing to face the future together. With Iris’s steadfast support, Artie enrolls in engineering classes, aiming for a steadier, better-paying job. The story closes on a note of renewed commitment and cautious hope, anchored by a choice to build a more stable life after the danger and deception have passed.
