One night at the fast-food chicken joint Poultry Palace, Bonnie, Emily Hahn does not like the Zurg belt buckle toy she gets as her kids’ meal prize and asks if she can swap it for a Mini Buzz Lightyear. The cashier explains that the Mini Buzz display is out of stock and that the items in the display cabinet are for display only. A Mini Buzz Lightyear complains to a Mini Zurg that they’ll never be played with, but the Mini Zurg would rather stay put than risk trouble at the restaurant.

After their dinner, Bonnie takes the toys home and heads to the ball pit with Rex and Buzz Lightyear, who she also brought along. Seizing a chance to be played with, a Teddy Newton as Mini Buzz sneaks out of the display cabinet, dives into the ball pit, and pulls Buzz under the toys to take his place. Bonnie’s mother, Lori Alan, packs the toys into her bag, unaware that Mini Buzz is not the real Buzz.

The impostor Mini Buzz convinces Rex that he is the genuine Buzz and that he was briefly shrunk by the plastic balls, but once they return home, the other toys instantly realize something is off. Meanwhile, Buzz, who has no idea he’s been left behind, discovers a hidden storage room where a support group for abandoned fast-food toys gathers, led by the mermaid Neptuna. The group assumes Buzz is another casualty of abandonment and forces him to participate in a therapy-like meeting. During a reenactment session, Buzz befriends Gary Grappling Hook, a toy grappling hook and fellow group member, who helps him plot a way back.

Back at Bonnie’s house, the other toys press Mini Buzz for Buzz’s whereabouts and begin outlining a plan to break into Poultry Palace to rescue him. Buzz eventually makes his way home and confronts Mini Buzz about the deception. The two confrontations give way to a surprising turning point: Mini Buzz opens up to the group, and Buzz ends up joining him as a kind of sponsor, offering guidance and support as they navigate trust and belonging together.

In a cheeky post-credits moment, the camera returns to Poultry Palace where Mini Zurg sits contentedly with only the belt buckle for company, a small smile on his lips as he clutches the lone, electronic prize.
