Three months after Toy Story 3, Bonnie is on winter break and heads toward a family vacation in Hawaii, leaving her bedroom to the toys. Among them, Ken and Barbie secretly hide in Bonnie's backpack, hoping to join the trip.

At first, they imagine they have landed in Hawaii, but the reality sinks in that they are still in Bonnie’s room.

Mr. Potato Head Mr. Potato Head questions the idea that Bonnie would take her backpack on vacation, and he tries to recruit Captain Zip Captain Zip to pilot him and Barbie to Hawaii. Captain Zip, however, notes that he does not actually fly an airplane.

Barbie reveals to the group that Ken planned to have their first kiss on a sunset beach, inspired by a Hawaii travel brochure. This inspires the toys to stage their own version of Hawaii inside Bonnie’s room.

After a series of playful adventures, the two share a kiss outside Bonnie’s house at sunset, only to slip off the porch edge and end up buried in the snow. The rest of the toys spring into action, digging them out and freeing them from a block of ice using a hair dryer and a screwdriver.
