Sleepwalk (1986) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Sleepwalk (1986), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

The film opens in a dim, shadowed apartment where a bound Chinese manuscript rests on an altar, its pages suggesting age and power. An unidentified woman slides open the altar, removes the first page, rolls it up, and exits, leaving the rest of the text behind in the dim glow. A second figure, an African American man, enters in turn and repeats the act, slipping away with another fragment while the room swallows the rest of the manuscript in silence.

Nicole, a casually dressed young translator, works at a small production company under a gruff boss who handles phones and reception as part of his duties. She types lines into a device while colleagues wrestle with the ever-changing forms of technology that surround them. Into this routine step her friend and roommate, Isabelle Ann Magnuson. Isabelle is an illegal immigrant who lights up only when money seems within reach, and she brings a restless energy into Nicole’s quiet life.

A pair of men arrive, and Nicole is hired to translate the newly acquired pages, showered with cash on her desk as part of the deal. One of the men resembles the bound figure from the earlier scene, and his fingers—missing in a disturbing detail—become a chilling reminder of the manuscript’s ominous pull. The pages begin to exert a strange influence over Nicole, and the more she works with the text, the more her ordinary life seems to unravel around her. The first tremors seep into her routine, altering schedules, scenting conversations, and sharpening a sense of impending trouble she cannot quite name.

Isabelle and Nicole return home and encounter Nicole’s reserved son, Jimmie. A glance between the two women hints at a strain neither fully names, and Nicole notices a few stray hairs left by Isabelle as if the apartment itself is recording their presence.

The following day a new Asian woman arrives and pays Nicole to translate additional text. This time, the boss takes the cash and agrees to end Nicole’s freelance access to the pages, yet the enigmatic figure introduces a new complication: a rooftop rendezvous where the woman—named Ecco Ako—claims to be the source of the material. Nicole waits for the promised meeting, tension mounting as the manuscript’s influence continues to ripple through her life.

Soon after, two cops arrive with Ecco’s receipt from the previous day, informing the boss that the woman has been murdered and that her fingers were brutally dismembered. Nicole listens from a distance, the danger she feels intensifying as the investigation edges closer to her own work and the text she has been translating.

That night, as Nicole leaves the workplace alone, a menacing atmosphere lingers in the elevator and the building’s hallways. She passes the pair who first introduced the manuscript and who now occupy one floor of the building. When she finally reaches home, Isabelle cries because her hair has fallen out completely, a visible sign of the toll the manuscript has taken. Nicole offers money to Isabelle to take her son to Atlantic City for a gamble, hoping the distraction might calm the fear that has overtaken their lives.

The trip to the beach begins with chaos and a dash of desperation. With Jimmie asleep in the back seat, Isabelle steps out of the car to buy time, and a thief Richard Boes steals the vehicle, unaware that a child remains inside. Isabelle returns home, recounting that her son is missing, and the two women are left in stunned, speechless silence as Nicole frantically calls out the boy’s name.

When the thief delivers the stolen car to his partner, she spots the child and refuses to take the car, sending them away. The thief then kidnaps Jimmie, blindfolds him, and drives him to a wall by the beach, where he is left alone. As the film closes, Jimmie sits motionless and blindfolded on the wall, unaware that Nicole lies asleep on the same wall nearby, a silent tether between their fates and the power of the manuscript that drew them into its shadowy orbit.
