In a quiet Wisconsin town, John, a respected and well-liked carpenter, carries out a shocking act of violence by murdering the local town bully, Dutch Miller. As he tries to dispose of the body in a bonfire, he accepts help from a friend who grows uneasy when he notices traces of blood on John’s clothes. Across the miles in Chicago, Ben, John’s nephew, becomes smitten with a new coworker, Kate, at an advertising agency. What starts as friendly camaraderie deepens into a mutual attraction as they share drinks and stories about their lives. Ben opens up about how his uncle raised him after his mother died and his father abandoned the family, while Kate, bound by a personal rule against dating coworkers, agrees to help him set up a one-night encounter at a bar. Dutch has reinvented himself as a born-again Christian, confessing to various people as a form of penance for his former pranks, and Dutch’s brother, Danny, is left to wonder whether Dutch really met a grim fate. A chance encounter between John and Danny near the site where Dutch’s abandoned truck was found spurs Danny to share his growing suspicions; he has been watching who passes by, convinced that the killer will return to the scene of the crime. A sheriff’s warning follows, cautioning John that Danny has become obsessive and that several people, including John, might be under suspicion.

The trip to Ben’s hometown becomes a focal point for the tangled web of relationships. While the group visits John and then reconnects with Danny, Danny storms off after John denies having any involvement with Dutch—and refuses to discuss what happened between Dutch and John’s sister, who reportedly killed herself after Dutch ended their affair. That night, Ben and Kate acknowledge their growing feelings and share a kiss, even as danger lurks nearby. John, increasingly cornered by the unknowns, moves to protect his secret, and when Danny returns to John’s property armed with a pistol, gasoline, and a lighter, a confrontation erupts. John overpowers Danny and kills him, a brutal act that will haunt all involved.

The ride home becomes a tense moment of reflection and misdirection.
