Show (2003) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Show (2003), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Ridhima, a Delhi-based pharmaceutical executive, travels to a remote village in Andhra Pradesh to negotiate a patent deal with a professor who has developed a new drug. The professor leaves a note saying he’ll return late due to urgent work and asks her to wait for his return. Enter Madhav Rao, a junior advocate who oversees the patent sale and arrives in the same place. Ridhima is carefree and single, with a boyfriend named Sanjay. Madhav, by contrast, is wary of his career and unhappy in his marriage to Sudha, feeling pressured and taunted.

At the professor’s secluded resort, the two strangers gradually form a cautious friendship. To pass the time, Ridhima offers a substantial reward—₹30,000 for anyone who can entertain her for at least an hour. Madhav, seeking to uplift the mood, initially pretends to be a psycho as a prank, which provokes a hurt reaction from Ridhima, though they still connect on a personal level. He then reveals that he once pursued acting for five years before abandoning it to become a junior advocate. The conversation reveals his sense of unfulfillment and the cracks in his domestic life.

Seeking a creative way to fill the hours, Madhav proposes staging a small play about a married couple contemplating divorce. Ridhima is not sure at first, but she agrees to participate as a way to pass the time until the professor returns. The rehearsal is interrupted when Madhav grows disheartened by her lack of enthusiasm, but he eventually prepares a lavish lunch that showcases her favorite dishes and softens the mood. Afterward, Ridhima confesses she isn’t sure she can act, and Madhav challenges her to gain confidence. They decide to resume the project, and the scene shifts into their improvised relationship drama.

In the play, they cast themselves as Sandhya and Subba Rao, a couple whose relationship is on the verge of repair or breakdown. As they act, Madhav is haunted by phrases he recalls from his wife Sudha, words that Sandhya seems to echo, intensifying his inner conflict. The line between performance and reality blurs, and Madhav steps away from the scene to confront the feelings that have been awakening inside him.

The tension culminates when Sandhya confesses she loves Sanjay and speaks of their son Shambu. The confession is shocking and brutal: Sandhya suggests that both of them should die in a well. Enraged, Madhav reacts violently, beating Sandhya. Then, in a surprising reversal, he reveals his own love for her and speaks of having sacrificed his life for the possibility of their happiness. The moment alarms him, and he recognizes that his feelings have spiraled beyond the bounds of a mere drama.

Ridhima realizes this is no ordinary play and that Madhav’s attachment has driven him toward madness. To stop him from harming himself, she claps, jolting him back to reality and bringing the performance to a halt. With his senses partially restored, Madhav apologizes for his actions, and the two share a moment of uneasy laughter as they try to forget the unsettling episode.

As the tension eases, the professor finally returns, bringing the episode—and the escalating emotional stakes of the day—to a close. The story unfolds with a stark, emotionally charged arc that blurs the boundary between art and life, leaving the characters to confront what they truly want from love, loyalty, and the fragile boundaries of devotion.
