David Helfgott, seeking refuge from a torrential downpour, finds himself in a local restaurant. Concerned staff try to communicate with him amid his frantic behavior, eventually identifying him and learning he is staying at a nearby hotel.

After her shift, waitress Sylvia helps David return to his hotel. However, their brief interaction ends abruptly when Sylvia, overwhelmed by David's attempts to share his musical insights, decides to leave before they truly connect.
