In the tumultuous 1960s, young Tomás, portrayed by John Bell, is a petite Irish orphan subjected to relentless teasing about his small stature, shy demeanor, and stuttering speech by the other children at the orphanage. His life takes a dramatic turn when Maire, played by Connie Nielsen, a compassionate woman, becomes his guardian and takes him to her picturesque island home. Here, Tomás meets her husband, Alec (Aidan Quinn), whose initial reluctance to adopt an older child adds to Tomás’s feelings of insecurity.

As he gradually adapts to his new surroundings, Tomás forms meaningful friendships with Nancy (Tara Alice Scully) and Seamus (Jack Gleeson), who introduce him to the enchanting world of their secret cave, teeming with fluttering bats. Though initially frightened by the cave’s eerie ambiance, Tomás slowly becomes comfortable with his new friends, who provide him with the comfort he desperately needs after escaping the cave in fear.

On the eve of his birthday, Maire and Alec surprise Tomás with a shiny new fishing rod and reel, setting the stage for a day full of adventure. However, Alec gets sidetracked while assisting friends with a boat, leaving Tomás to wait on the beach for what seems like an eternity.

As dusk approaches, Maire finds Tomás and takes him out on the water.
