Shell, a seventeen-year-old Shell lives in almost total isolation at a remote Highland petrol station, where her father, Pete, works as a mechanic and faces epilepsy that shapes their daily rhythm. Her two regulars stand out: Adam, a young sawmill worker, and Hugh, a divorced salesman who visits less often yet leaves a mark on her day. One night, Pete and Shell come to the aid of a couple, Robert and Clare, who have collided with a deer. In the morning, Pete strips the deer to salvage venison, while the couple assesses their own car’s frailty and decides to rent instead. Clare chats with Shell, who opens up about a fractured past—her mother left when she was four, she stopped attending school early, and she has lived solely with her father since. Clare even leaves behind the book she was reading, a small, quiet gesture of connection in Shell’s otherwise solitary life.

As Pete returns from the car-turned-scrap-yard errand, Shell’s longing bubbles to the surface, and she attempts to seduce her father, only to be rebuffed. That night, when the boiler dies and the station grows cold, Shell climbs into bed with him again, seeking closeness that feels both comforting and forbidden. A young mother, Young Mother, with her Little Girl stops at the petrol station to use the toilets. The child leaves behind a doll, and Shell chases after the car to return it. Before heading home, she lies in the roadside heather, gazing out over the loch and the craggy Beinn Ghobhlach—moments of quiet introspection that contrast with the station’s harsh routine.

Back at the station, Pete endures another fit and lashes out, biting Shell as he convulses. When he regains his senses, he mistakes Shell for his wife and proclaims a desperate need for his daughter. Shell insists she will stay with him, even as Pete’s behavior grows more troubling. The moment intensifies as he kisses her, then, horrified by what he has done, recoils. They fall asleep, only for Pete to awaken later in a panic and, guilt-ridden for the kiss, throw himself in front of a passing lorry. The crash is devastating, and Shell is left distraught by her father’s suicide.

Adam remains by Shell’s side as she grieves, offering quiet comfort, but morning brings little relief. A lorry arrives for fuel, and Shell, feeling the weight of her loss and uncertain about the future, walks away from Adam and climbs into the driver’s seat of the next vehicle. She leaves with the unknown driver, with no concrete plan for where she will end up. The film closes on stark, expansive shots of the Destitution Road, leaving Shell’s fate open as the landscape speaks to her isolation and resilience.

The Highlands loom large throughout this intimate tale, capturing a girl’s struggle to define herself beyond the confines of a small, demanding world.
