Shall We Dance?

John Clark [Richard Gere] is a lawyer with a charming wife, Beverly Clark [Susan Sarandon], and a loving family, who nevertheless feels that something is missing as he makes his way through the city every day. On his nightly Chicago commute, a striking, lost-looking woman in the window of a dance studio lingers in his thoughts, pulling him toward a world he hasn’t explored before. Driven by that glimmer of curiosity, he signs up for ballroom dancing lessons, hoping to meet the mystery woman and perhaps rediscover a spark in his own life.

His first foray into the studio life is anything but graceful. The elder mentor Miss Mitzi [Anita Gillette] runs the class, and John quickly discovers he’s as awkward as his novice classmates Chic [Bobby Cannavale] and Vern [Omar Benson Miller]. When he finally encounters Paulina [Jennifer Lopez], the woman from the window, she makes it clear she’s there to study, not date, and her cool professionalism tests him just as much as the dance floor does. Yet something about Paulina’s resolve begins to draw him in, and as the lessons continue, John finds a real, undeniable passion for dancing taking root inside him.

Haunted by the idea of keeping his new obsession secret from his family and coworkers, John pours himself into practice and begins training for Chicago’s biggest dance competition. His friendship with Paulina deepens, rekindling her own long-dormant love for movement. The studio becomes a second home, a place where the rhythm unlocks parts of them both that daily life had buried. Meanwhile, Beverly grows increasingly suspicious of John’s absences and subtle evasions. She hires a private investigator to uncover the truth, a decision that introduces a new, uneasy tension into their marriage. The PI, Devine [Richard Jenkins], enters their world and starts his own set of lessons, hinting at surprises to come, even as he quietly begins to explore the dance floor himself.

For the competition, John is paired with Bobbie [Lisa Ann Walter], while his friend Link [Stanley Tucci] steps in to handle the Latin dances. The trio navigates the stage with a shared energy, and John and Bobbie’s Waltz goes smoothly, but the quickstep becomes a distraction-filled moment: from the crowd, John scans for his wife and daughter, losing his focus, they stumble, fall, and are disqualified. A parking garage confrontation with Beverly follows, and the disappointment pushes John toward stepping back from dancing, much to everyone’s dismay.

Paulina, inspired by John’s dedication, considers a return to competition and begins planning an overseas move. She hosts a going-away party at the studio, inviting John to attend, though he’s hesitant. It isn’t until Beverly leaves behind a pair of dancing shoes that John wears, rekindling his confidence. He goes to meet Beverly at her workplace, where a heartfelt moment helps him admit that while dancing has become a bright flame in his life, his love for Beverly remains deepest of all. They share a determined, communal dance and head to the party for one last, hopeful moment with Paulina.

What follows is a tapestry of endings and new beginnings. Link and Bobbie end up together, offering a quiet, enduring partnership that contrasts with the earlier competition chaos. Chic, who has always carried a sharp wit and a secret about his own heart, dances at a club with a partner and gradually finds happiness there as well. Miss Mitzi finds a new partner and proceeds with a renewed sense of purpose. John and Beverly, now freer and more attuned to each other, share warm dancing moments at home, even in the kitchen, turning everyday life into a celebration. Vern, newly married to his fiancée, shares a dance at their wedding, while Devine—now more of a teacher than a pursuer of clues—begins giving dance lessons to others. And Paulina, with a new partner, channels her renewed energy into competition at the Blackpool Dance Festival, carrying the lessons she learned with John into a late, triumphant return to the stage.
