Two brothers from a small village in rural Mexico share a passion for football, engaging in local matches that highlight their differing personalities and talents. Tato, played by Gael García Bernal, shines as the star striker, while his brother Beto, portrayed by Diego Luna, takes on the unconventional role of an eccentric goalkeeper. Their lives take a dramatic turn when a talent scout notices their skills during a game and offers one of them a golden opportunity to move to the Capital and try out for one of the country’s most renowned teams.
However, since the scout’s roster is already filled, only one brother can seize this chance, leading them to settle the matter with a penalty shootout. Despite the tension, Tato emerges victorious, gaining the right to pursue his dreams in the bustling city.
As Tato adjusts to his new life, he embraces his newfound fame, earning the nickname ‘Cursi.’ He rises to stardom, becomes a national hero, and even starts dating a glamorous model. Meanwhile, Beto quickly follows suit, landing a position with a rival team and adopting the moniker ‘Rudo.’ However, while Cursi basks in success, Rudo grapples with the difficulties of city life and yearns for the comfort of their rural home.
The brothers’ fortunes take a dark turn as Tato struggles to maintain his goal-scoring prowess and watch his relationship slip away, while Rudo finds himself ensnared in the dangerous worlds of cocaine and gambling. The film builds to a climactic confrontation during a critical match that will determine their fates. Cursi faces the prospect of demotion to the Second Division if he doesn’t score, while Rudo is coerced into throwing the match to settle his gambling debts, with dire consequences if he fails.
In a tense climax, Rudo manages to save a penalty from his brother, leaving the match in a goalless draw. The fallout from this moment is significant: Cursi decides to quit football entirely, longing for the familiarity of home, while Rudo suffers a grave injury, losing a leg and effectively ending his career.
Ultimately, the brothers return to their rural roots, reunited with family, where the simplicity and warmth of their earlier life provide a haven from the chaos they experienced in the city. The story eloquently captures the trials of ambition, familial bonds, and the quest for identity amidst the relentless pursuit of success.
