In 1985, fourteen-year-old identical twins Heather and Heidi Burge Burge are pushed by their relentless father, Larry Burge, to leave their old school and transfer to a new one to boost their chances at college scholarships. Heidi, feeling like she’s always living in Heather’s shadow, seeks independence by pursuing a school drama and, along with her sister, ends up on the volleyball court rather than basketball.

On campus, the sisters focus on volleyball, but the Sea Kings’ coach notices Heather’s height and seizes the chance to have her train for the coming volleyball season by playing basketball, hoping to build a strong all‑around player. Heather soon meets Nicky Williams, the star of Palos Verdes High School Sea Kings, and a fierce rivalry forms as both girls push to prove themselves.

Heidi, meanwhile, learns that their father told the coach that both sisters would play on the basketball team, despite Heidi having committed to a school play. This revelation fuels tension and makes Heather question the pressure she’s under, while Heidi longs to prove she can stand on her own.

As the season unfolds, the Burge twins arrive at the Sea Kings with some rough edges—they initially try to hide their living situation by claiming they’re wealthier than they are, which leaves a sour impression on teammates and fans. Nicky grows wary of the new arrivals, and her father’s business commitments keep him preoccupied, leaving Nicky feeling shadowed and unsupported.

Their first tournament in New York results in a strong showing, with Heather earning MVP honors after a tense run that tests their teamwork and trust. In another pivotal game, Heidi is chosen to take the game‑winning free throws, igniting a spark of jealousy in Heather, who has always been the team’s crowd‑pleaser. The conflict leads Heather to an after‑hours moment of doubt and growth: she shares a late‑night workout with Galen Alderman, a senior star who lives in their apartment complex, and through that encounter she learns that success comes from collaboration as much as individual skill.

The coach approaches the Burge family afterward with a practical path forward, suggesting summer basketball camps to sharpen the girls’ skills. Mary Burge, the mother, supports a broader education for the girls, encouraging Heidi to pursue drama during the summer, underscoring how important it is to be well‑rounded. The family forgives the coach’s push, and a new understanding begins to take shape: the twins can chase big dreams while still supporting one another and growing as a family.

A flashforward teases an extraordinary possibility: both Burge twins on professional WNBA teams—Heidi with the Los Angeles Sparks and Heather with the Sacramento Monarchs—yet the film clarifies that their actual WNBA careers never overlapped. Heidi retires after two seasons in 1998, while Heather appears in 1999 for 13 games. Most of their basketball careers unfold overseas, well before the WNBA’s expansion, painting a portrait of two sisters who redefine what success means through perseverance, adaptability, and teamwork.
