The planets Mars and Earth come so close that a cosmic force is disturbed, leading to a baby being diverted from its destined planet. This event is depicted through two comet-like bodies colliding and changing their paths dramatically. The disruption occurs during the summer of 1954 and sets the stage for the subsequent events.

A green-headed baby with antennae arrives at the hospital, causing immediate concern. Joseph Wilbur anxiously waits with other fathers as his baby is brought in, and he notices the baby's unusual features like beeping antennae, realizing something is amiss, leading him to faint in shock.

Joseph argues with his wife Martha about keeping the baby at home, fearing the child's strange appearance and communication abilities. Martha insists the baby needs sunshine and fresh air, reflecting their conflicting concerns about the baby’s uniqueness.

Joseph takes the baby out in a stroller, where the infant surprises him by crawling onto the stroller's hood and beeping, and later communicates with a bee nearby. These interactions deepen Joseph’s worries about the baby’s strange behavior and abilities.

An elderly woman notices the baby's health and strange features, attempting to examine him with glasses. Her horror escalates when the baby uses his antennae to manipulate her glasses, leading to her bloodcurdling scream and exposing the baby’s alien traits.

Martha observes the baby doing advanced tasks like solving taxes, building a molecule model, and constructing a solar system model, indicating extraordinary intelligence. The baby is also shown watching a TV show and creating his own toy spaceship, highlighting his curiosity and inventive nature.

The family receives a letter from Mars via a small rocket, revealing that the baby's origin is from Mars due to a past cosmic disturbance. The message explains the baby switch, naming the Martian baby 'Mot' and the Earth baby 'Yob', prompting urgent caution.

Mot launches his toy spaceship out the bedroom window using a highchair as a launch pad, beginning his adventure by flying into a high-rise hotel. Joseph chases after him, leading to a sequence where Joseph falls out of a window while trying to catch the baby.

Inside an auditorium, a UFO skeptic ridicules the idea of flying saucers and Martian babies until Mot appears in his flying saucer, causing the skeptic to laugh and then cry in surprise. Joseph arrives and attempts to catch the flying baby but falls out the window in his pursuit.

Joseph awakens from what was revealed to be a nightmare while reading a science magazine about communicating with Mars. Relieved, he rushes to the nursery to see a healthy human baby, indicating that the previous events were just a vivid dream.

The scene zooms in on the baby's wrist, revealing an ID bracelet that reads 'YOB,' confirming that the baby is not from Mars but is indeed Joseph and Martha's own son. The story concludes with the revelation that the strange events were fabricated by Joseph's dream.
