Cathy Palmer, JoBeth Williams is a diligent, everyday woman who threads her way through a world that values routine and sameness. A voice over opens with a small, almost domestic question—No, that’s not right. The film then follows Cathy as she finishes a story at her typewriter and sends it off, only to discover that her life is about to tilt toward something much more cinematic. After winning a contest to write a short story inspired by the Rebecca Ryan novels, Cathy receives an all-expense-paid trip to Paris for two, along with the chance to meet the author behind the beloved series. Her husband, Kevin Palmer, a conventional, self-absorbed man, tries to persuade her to decline, but Cathy’s curiosity and need to create drive her to accept a solo journey to the city of light.

In Paris, Cathy’s adventure quickly spirals into chaos. A pickpocket steals her purse, and as she chases the thief through bustling streets, a car strikes her, leaving her with a sudden and unsettling amnesia. When she regains consciousness, she believes she is Rebecca Ryan, the dashing detective linked to the novels she admires. The world she walks into treats her as if she truly were the character—she moves into the glamorous Hôtel de Crillon, and staff cater to her whims as if she were the author’s own stand-in. The hotel’s opulence becomes a stage for Cathy to improvise a new identity, and the people around her go along, playing along with her belief that she’s living Rebecca Ryan’s adventures rather than Cathy’s own.

Alan McMann, Tom Conti, the actual author of the Rebecca Ryan novels, appears as the person Cathy encounters in this surreal reality. He expects a clerical assistant from an agency, and his first interactions with Cathy blur the line between fiction and life. Cathy, however, mistakes Alan for Rebecca Ryan’s gay sidekick, Dimitri, rather than recognizing him as the writer and a man who is trying to guide a persona she has swallowed whole. This mix-up fuels a chase across Paris as Cathy—now convinced she must save Victor Marchand from an assassination plot—throws herself into a sequence of impulsive rescues. The man she believes is a political mastermind becomes a target in a dangerous, real world that feels more like a book than a city.

The pursuit intensifies as Cathy and Alan navigate a high-stakes game that moves from café tables to train carriages and into the private spaces of Victor Marchand, the political figure at the center of the danger. Victor, a sophisticated and calculating figure, appears always a step ahead, and their mission to protect him leads to a series of near-misses and dramatic rescues.
