On the edge of the galaxy, Emperor Tod Spengo, backed by the loyal General Afir, seizes a tiny planet populated entirely by fools and renames it after himself. He marshals every resource on this world to forge a weapon known as the Super Death Ray Laser, a megaframe of power designed to obliterate Earth and crown him the supreme ruler of the universe. When he peeks at the laser’s planned point of impact—a quiet Southern California suburb—he becomes instantly captivated by Marge Nelson, a housewife whose normal life fascinates him.
To claim her, Spengo abducts Marge and her husband during their 20th-anniversary weekend, pulling them onto his world with the Magnobeam, a giant magnet that makes the escape nearly impossible. Marge’s capture marks the beginning of a strange and perilous journey for both of them, with the fate of two planets hanging in the balance.
Separated on Spengo’s world, Marge is treated to the lap of luxury, while Dick is thrown into a dungeon. There, he encounters the rightful ruler of Spengo, King Raff, who provides him with crucial clues about his son, Prince Sirk, and Raff’s daughter, Semage. The bond between Dick and the rebels begins to form as he learns more about a resistance that fights from the desert, led by Raff’s children and their allies, all posing as tall birds to stay one step ahead of Spengo’s regime.
Back in the dungeon, Spengo’s grip tightens as he tries to read Dick’s mind to uncover the secret to Marge’s heart. The emperor’s interrogator, Sibor, experiences a change of heart and decides to help Dick escape, tipping the balance of trust in an unlikely direction.
Dick escapes through the sewers, narrowly avoiding carnivorous Lub-Lubs, and finds his way to the desert, where he meets the rebels and earns a rightful place among them. The group—fueled by Dick’s resolve and the courage of Raff’s children—embarks on a bold plan to infiltrate Spengo’s palace and rescue Marge. The alliance is delicate, but the shared cause strengthens their chances against a tyrant who believes power justifies any means.
General Afir, uneasy with Spengo’s tyranny, recognizes that Dick and Marge may be the key to ending the emperor’s rule. He schemes to guide the couple toward safety and victory, even as Spengo uncovers the betrayal. The stakes rise as Afir is drawn into a perilous trap that could cost him his life.
As the wedding ceremony unfolds, a detachment of Spengo’s soldiers heads into the desert only to find an empty camp, undone by a feint and a clever trap. Meanwhile, Dick and the rebels rise from a large wooden Trojan bust brought into the chapel by Spengo for his wedding, and fighting erupts throughout the palace. The two sides clash with swords as Marge seizes an opportunity to free herself and help Dick push Spengo into the sewers, where the Lub-Lubs close in.
With Spengo defeated, King Raff is restored to the throne and reverses the polarity on the Magnobeam, sending Dick and Marge back toward Earth. They return to their home in time to share the anniversary with their children and to reveal slides of their space journey to Planet Spengo, presented as memories from Santa Barbara. The family ends the night on the roof, looking up at the stars and cherishing the quiet, hopeful moment after a voyage that tested their courage and strengthened their bond.
Back on Earth, the montage of their journey includes appearances by their children—Alan Nelson, Stephanie Nelson, and Carl—as the family raises a toast to new beginnings and the mysterious adventures that life can bring.
