In the sizzling summer of the 1980s Manhattan, a lonely individual named Dog becomes captivated by a television commercial for a robotic companion. This unexpected infatuation compels him to immediately place an order for one.

When Robot finally arrives, Dog names him and the two instantly form a deep and unbreakable bond. Their relationship flourishes as they explore the vibrant streets of New York City together.

Dog and Robot embark on a joyful beach day filled with laughter and splashing in the waves. This carefree outing represents the pinnacle of their friendship as they enjoy the summer sun.

Their joy is short-lived as they awaken to find the beach deserted and Robot immobile due to rust from the seawater. Realizing he cannot save Robot, Dog faces the harsh reality of their situation.

Upon retracing his steps home, Dog discovers that authorities have sealed off access to the beach with a barbed wire fence, restricting entry until the following June. This tragic turn forces Dog to confront his helplessness.

As winter blankets the city, Dog embarks on a quest in the Catskills, seeking connection and solace in the midst of his loneliness. Yet, his journey is met with obstacles, including a sleighing accident caused by mischievous anteaters.

When June finally arrives, Dog returns to the beach, expecting to see Robot. Instead, he is confronted with the painful absence of his companion and discovers a discarded limb, reminding him of their fractured bond.

A clever raccoon named Rascal finds Robot's remnants in a junkyard and sees an opportunity for revival. Using a boombox, Rascal pieces Robot back together, breathing new life into his mechanical form.

As summer shines bright, Dog forges an unexpected friendship with Rascal, while Tin, Dog's new robotic companion, becomes an essential part of his life. Their new bond represents hope and the possibility of healing.
