Red Scarf (1964) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Red Scarf (1964), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

In 1952, during the Korean War, many South Korean fighter pilots were killed. Among the survivors, Na Gwan-jung stands out as one of the bravest and best. In the air he remains cool and level-headed, cutting through the chaos with precision and a minimum of fuss, while on the ground he shares beers with his squad, embracing a ‘live for the moment’ outlook shaped by the brutal rhythms of wartime. The mission is led by Wing commander Park Am, whose guidance frames the squad’s high-stakes operations and keeps morale steady even as losses mount.

At home, the war also touches his heart. Ji-seon is the wife of a fallen pilot, widowed almost at the start of her marriage. Unable to support herself, she considers becoming a bargirl. Na Gwan-jung intervenes, saves her from that fate, helps for a time, and gradually falls in love. Yet because she is the widow of a close comrade, he cannot act on his feelings. Instead, he steps into the role of matchmaker, introducing her to Bae Dae-bong, a cocky, recently transferred pilot who embodies a different kind of spark within the squad.

Under their command, Na Gwan-jung’s unit is assigned to destroy a vitally strategic bridge. During the operation, Bae Dae-bong’s plane is shot down. Not wanting Ji-seon to lose another loved one, Na Gwan-jung risks everything to keep the downed pilot safe until rescue arrives. The mission ends in victory for the South Korean airmen, their coordinated effort succeeding despite the mounting danger. Yet personal emotions threaten Na Gwan-jung’s focus, and he cannot fly and fight with his usual cool, detached precision; he is killed in action, leaving a void at the heart of the squad.

Back at base, his will is read and his belongings, including the red scarf that all pilots wear, are distributed among his comrades. Na Gwan-jung’s mother Han Eun-jin arrives with beers she had planned to share with her son, only to discover his death and, in a poignant act of camaraderie, distributes the beers among his fellow pilots. [Ji-seon] arrives soon after, and upon learning of Na Gwan-jung’s death she clutches his red scarf and cries inconsolably, a quiet, heartbreaking reminder of the life he touched and the cost of war.
