Charlie, portrayed by Hugh Jackman, travels through the countryside hauling a trailer for a local fair. He is determined to compete with his robot Ambush against a formidable 800-pound bull, hoping for a win that could change their fortunes.

As the fight begins, the ringleader unexpectedly alters the terms by presenting a 2,000-pound bull instead of the promised 800-pounder. Despite being outmatched, Charlie and Ambush persist, but their focus is shattered when Charlie gets distracted by a girl in the stands.

The bull takes advantage of Charlie's distraction and charges at Ambush, causing significant damage to the robot's leg. Charlie watches helplessly as Ambush struggles to continue fighting, ultimately failing against the nearly unstoppable force of the bull.

After losing the match and with debts piling up, Charlie is forced to flee the scene to escape the consequences of his financial woes. The pressure mounts as he realizes he needs to find a way to support himself and his son, Max.

Following the passing of his ex-wife, Max is set to return to Charlie's custody by Texas law. Although Charlie's aunt offers to take care of Max, Charlie resorts to blackmailing her wealthy husband for $100,000 to secure custody.

With the money obtained from blackmail, Charlie purchases a vintage champion robot named Noisy Boy. In a bid to recapture glory, he attempts to train Noisy Boy with the help of his son Max and Bailey, his former love.

Charlie’s hasty training techniques lead to a disastrous fight where Noisy Boy is defeated. The loss is crushing for Charlie, and he recognizes the need for a change in strategy as he faces yet another setback in his boxing aspirations.

While searching a junkyard for parts, Max discovers a buried robot, which Charlie initially dismisses. Despite his father's lack of belief, Max spends the night excavating it and realizes it has a rare Shadow Function, igniting hope for their future.

Max convinces Charlie to use Atom in a match after forming a bond with the robot. They discover Atom's unique capabilities and begin training together, blending Max's showmanship with Charlie's fighting strategy to maximize Atom's potential.

Charlie, Max, and Atom venture to The Zoo, an underground fighting ring devoid of rules. Despite the risks, Max makes a bold bet against the ringleader, leading to an exhilarating underdog victory that fuels their ambition.

After a series of successful fights, Atom gains significant attention and is invited to the Worldwide Robot Boxing (WRB) competition. This opportunity brings new challenges and heightened expectations for Charlie and Max.

Charlie's strategic acumen is tested in their first WRB match against Twin Cities, a formidable robot known for its dual controllers. Utilizing Atom's agility and adapting to Twin Cities' weaknesses, Charlie leads Atom to a thrilling victory.

With their newfound fame, Max dares to challenge Zeus, the reigning champion bot infamous for his devastation of opponents. This bold move propels them into the spotlight but also raises the stakes significantly as they prepare for the championship.

Amidst their rising fame, Charlie's past catches up with him when debt collectors confront him, threatening Max in the process. Realizing the danger, Charlie must make tough decisions about their safety as father and son.

In a climactic showdown against Zeus, Atom faces overwhelming odds that seem insurmountable. Although they lose the match, Atom earns the title of 'People's Champion,' cementing their legacy and showcasing their incredible journey in robot boxing.
