What Happens in Pegasus: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Pegasus (2019) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Zhang Chi, who had dreamed of becoming a rally driver since childhood, has already claimed the Bayanbulak Rally title five times, earning the highest honor in Chinese racing and entering his prime at 32. His ascent is derailed when he becomes entangled in illegal drag racing; after being caught, he receives a five-year suspension. During this time, he becomes the guardian of an orphaned boy, Zhang Fei, raising him as his own and clinging to the dream of returning to the track to prove himself.

Throughout the ban, he stays on the right side of the law, working at a fried-rice stall and later at a book stall to support his family, and he keeps away from cars. When the five years are up, a path to competition reopens: he can reclaim his place on the grid, but only after obtaining a driving license; the authorities confirm that his racing license will be automatically reinstated once that driving permit is secured.

Sun Yuqiang, his former co-driver who left the team and worked odd jobs, is pulled back into the fold by Zhang Chi. He leaves behind his mascot gig at an amusement park and rejoins the sport, ready to race again alongside his old partner.

Lin Zhendong stands as the sport’s current king. Trained in England from a young age, he watched Zhang Chi race when he was a teenager, and by the time he returns to China at twenty, he aims to challenge Zhang Chi on the track. In the five years apart, Lin Zhendong has become the new leader of the Bayanbulak Circuit, approaching retirement after the upcoming season because no one has matched him. He looks to this year’s Bayanbulak Rally as the ultimate test to determine who truly holds the title.

The race culminates in a dramatic showdown: Zhang Chi wins the rally, but just after crossing the finish line his car malfunctions and careens off a cliff, the film closing on the vehicle soaring through the air.
