In 1958, a pair of U.S. Air Force pilots and aspiring astronauts, William “Hawk” Hawkins and Frank Corvin, push their modified Bell X-2 beyond safe limits to chase new records. When Hawk powers ahead to break speed and altitude barriers, the aircraft stalls and both men are forced to eject. They narrowly miss a Boeing B-50 Superfortress piloted by navigator “Tank” Sullivan, and a rough ground rescue follows a tough confrontation between Hawk and Frank, ending with their boss Bob Gerson delivering a stern verdict and a public announcement that NASA will spearhead spaceflight tests rather than the Air Force.

Fast forward to the present, NASA is scrambling to prevent a derelict satellite, IKON, from decaying out of orbit and crashing to Earth after a faulty uplink. The satellite’s aging electronics resemble those of Skylab, a design Frank once helped develop. Bob, now a NASA project manager, asks Frank to lend his expertise—and to bring along the veterans who form “Team Daedalus”—Hawk, Tank, and Jerry O’Neill. The plan is to counter the satellite’s threat with a blend of old-school skill and new-generation crew, aimed at proving that experience can outpace computers. The Vice President urges the presence of the younger astronauts as well for publicity, and a unique dynamic emerges: the seasoned soldiers demonstrate techniques honed without onboard automation, teaching the new crew through example.

The mission, dubbed by the team as a rescue and reroute operation, discovers that IKON is not a mere communications satellite but a covert nuclear arsenal from the Cold War era. Its six missiles violate the Outer Space Treaty, and its ground control is compromised because the control system was stolen from Bob’s files by the KGB. Without a reliable ground signal, the satellite’s onboard computers would interpret the loss of contact as a nuclear strike and retaliate against targets near major cities. The plan shifts to using the shuttle’s payload-attach rockets to push IKON into a stable path toward deep space, thereby preventing a catastrophic launch. Yet a younger astronaut, Ethan Glance, following what he believes to be the right thing but acting on Bob’s original instructions, attempts to steer IKON into a controlled orbit himself. This move triggers a cascade of crises: a collision with the shuttle, extensive damage to the shuttle’s computers and engines, and the destruction of the satellite’s solar panels. Ethan is knocked unconscious and dragged along as the satellite careens away.

With Tank and Jerry tending to the injured Roger Hines, Frank and Hawk venture in space to reach IKON and activate a booster that slows the orbit’s decay. They rescue Ethan and realize that the only feasible way to avert disaster is to have someone ride the satellite as the missiles’ engines fire, guiding IKON away from Earth. Hawk, recently widowed and given eight months to live due to pancreatic cancer, makes a selfless choice to sacrifice himself in the hope of reaching the Moon and fulfilling a lifelong dream.

Back on the shuttle, Frank, Tank, and Jerry rethink their ascent plan. They decide to aim for a water landing, a tricky maneuver given the shuttle’s speed and angle of approach. As the craft descends, the crew must buy time for the rescue and stabilization of the situation. The moment requires an improvised, high-stakes slice of piloting: Frank recalls a maneuver Hawk once employed—pushing the shuttle’s flare angle closer to a stall to shed speed—allowing them to shed velocity and bring the shuttle down with controlled precision. Roger and Ethan are saved, and Tank and Jerry stay by Frank’s side, steadfast even as the risk remains high.

The closing act brings a quiet, solemn triumph. The mission’s resolution hinges on sacrifice, perseverance, and a renewed sense of teamwork across generations. The Moon becomes a poignant symbol—the camera lingers on its quiet surface as the venerable “Fly Me to the Moon” swells in the background. The story concludes with a powerful image: Hawk had not only set foot on the Moon in the past but had endured long enough to rest against a lunar rock and glimpse Earth again, a testament to courage, memory, and the enduring reach of human dreamers.
