In an undercover mission, the CIA recruits Professor Jerry Hathaway at Pacific Technical University to innovate a state-of-the-art power source for “Crossbow,” a laser weapon designed for covert political assassinations from outer space. Under the pretense of academic research, Hathaway gathers a group of exceptional students, excluding his devoted protégé Kent. He chooses to mask the true objective of their project, instead leveraging the brilliant ideas of his newest addition, Mitch Taylor - a teenage whiz kid who has made significant strides in the field of laser physics.

Mitch’s remarkable talent secures him the leading position on the project, stirring jealousy in Chris Knight, a self-styled icon of the “National Physics Club” and one of Mitch’s childhood heroes. However, Mitch soon discovers that this once-admired figure is more of a laid-back slacker than the dedicated student he envisioned. In the hopes of motivating Chris, Hathaway believes that Mitch’s engagement will inspire a more serious approach, leading to a revolutionary power source.

As Mitch juggles the intense demands of his new role and navigates the challenges of his relationships, he finds an unexpected connection with Jordan Cochran, an energetic student tormented by insomnia. As feelings blossom between Mitch and Jordan, he finds himself caught between his academic duties and personal desires.

With time running out, Mitch bears the crushing weight of expectations, while Chris appears unfazed, opting to embrace his easygoing lifestyle. The situation intensifies when Kent alerts Hathaway about a pool party invitation, resulting in a harsh reprimand from the professor. Overwhelmed and feeling defeated, Mitch seeks solace from his parents, only to be humiliated further when Kent secretly broadcasts their private conversation over the school’s PA system.

Just as Mitch contemplates abandoning his ambitious academic pursuits, Chris imparts a moving narrative about the burdens of education, reminiscent of Lazlo Hollyfeld - a former Pacific Tech student who fell victim to the rigors of scholarly pressure. Rather than share the same tragic fate, Chris has learned to maintain balance and relish in life’s simpler joys. Inspired by Chris’s reflections, Mitch decides to stick around, plotting a playful act of revenge against Kent by taking apart his prized 1972 Citroën DS and reassembling it within their dorm, showcasing the strength of friendship and determination.

As tensions linger, Hathaway confronts Chris with ire, lambasting him for unfinished assignments and a subpar attitude, threatening to deny him graduation. He callously informs Chris that a prestigious job he was promised will instead go to Kent, virtually extinguishing Chris’s aspirations in laser physics. This once-ambitious student now feels lost and despondent, leading Mitch to employ Chris’s principles to revive his friend’s hope and commitment. Together, they pledge to intensify their efforts to complete the five-megawatt laser in light of Hathaway’s upcoming examination, which looms ominously.

Meanwhile, Kent clandestinely plots to undermine their progress, sabotaging their latest efforts, leaving Chris reeling from the profound injustice he faces. Although aware of Kent’s treachery, Chris feels powerless and must confront the bitterness of the situation, which ultimately ignites his determination to develop a creative solution. His innovative approach yields spectacular results, earning gratitude and praise from Hathaway, which puts Chris back on track to graduate.

As he and Mitch rejoice in their hard-fought victory, Lazlo appears, revealing his retreat due to the harrowing implications of his work being exploited for military initiatives resulting in loss of life. This disclosure casts a shadow over their ambitious project, creating a sense of urgency. Rushing back to the lab, Mitch and Chris find it stripped of all their efforts, having been taken away by Hathaway.

As Jordan navigates their new collaborative dynamic alongside fellow innovator Ick Ikagami, they ingeniously deploy a covert radio transmitter within Kent’s dental device. Seizing this unique opportunity, Mitch employs the device to deliver riveting messages purportedly from Jesus, captivating Kent. With the test date now revealed, the team meticulously tracks Hathaway, pinpointing the location of an Air Force base where an advanced B-1 Lancer bomber is outfitted with sophisticated technology.

In a bold move, Chris and Mitch break into the airbase to reprogram the target coordinates, redirecting them towards Hathaway’s home. They gather outside with Jordan and Ick just as two distinguished guests - a professor and a Congressman - arrive, summoned for the test. Despite warnings supposedly from Jesus, Kent ventures inside, triggering the commence of the laser test. A massive bag of popcorn, which Hathaway detests, unwittingly heats up due to the laser’s reflection, resulting in an explosive eruption that launches Kent out the door amidst a cascade of popcorn kernels.

As chaos ensues, Lazlo pulls up in a shiny RV — a reward he snagged through luck in a mathematical contest — announcing his exit while neighborhood children revel in the exploding popcorn. Hathaway soon arrives at the scene, baffled by the transformed state of his once-quiet abode.
