What Happens in Rathnam: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Rathnam (2024) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Past: Three men orchestrate a brutal bus accident that kills every passenger, robs them of money and jewelry, and even attacks a police van, pushing it off a cliff. One of the trio is Panneer Selvam (Samuthirakani). A woman escapes the chaos, boards a bus, and later works in a village to support her son. The boy, in a moment of desperate defense, ends up killing a pimp who threatens the woman, and the man who orchestrated the escape takes the boy under his protection.

Present: Rathnam (Vishal Krishna) is a loyal henchman for MLA Panneer Selvam in Vellore. When Panneer informs him that a rogue ward councillor tried to sexually assault a girl, the victim jumps from a vehicle and is injured. Rathnam retaliates by beating the councillor’s men and killing the councillor with a chainsaw. He soon protects Malliga, a medical student who is a lookalike of his late mother Loganayagi, from land-grabbers Beema Rayudu and his brothers Subba Rayudu and Raghava Rayudu. Malliga’s family refuses to sell their land, which Beema and his brothers want for a medical college, and Rathnam steps in to shield her with help from Panneer Selvam, also revealing Malliga’s striking resemblance to Loganayagi.

Malliga, acting on Rathnam’s counsel, agrees to sell the land to fund the medical college. In response, Rathnam eliminates Subba Rayudu and warns Beema Rayudu that he will finish both Beema Rayudu and Raghava Rayudu. When confronted by Panneer Selvam, Rathnam opens up about his past: he has learned about his true family and Loganayagi’s history, and he explains how Beema Rayudu, Subba Rayudu, and Raghava Rayudu are Loganayagi’s brothers—Dharmalingam, Punniyakodi, and Keshavan—and what happened to them.

Back in the past, the three men had committed robberies. Loganayagi learned of their crimes and tried to stop them, but they escaped. Rathnam’s father, a police officer investigating the case, confronted them and was killed by the trio, while Loganayagi survived and escaped. Loganayagi gave birth to Rathnam but later died by suicide after being branded as a prostitute by a pimp. Rathnam had killed the pimp in a separate act that tied back to his earlier encounter with Panneer Selvam.

In the present, Rathnam introduces Malliga to his family. Beema Rayudu learns of this union and launches an assault on Rathnam’s kin, leaving several members dead. Rathnam hunts Beema Rayudu and brutally finishes Raghava Rayudu, ultimately beheading Beema Rayudu and surrendering to the police. Before heading to prison, Rathnam asks Malliga to marry someone and to name their child after him. Malliga, overwhelmed by the moment, breaks into tears and embraces Rathnam.

Ending explained

What Happens at the End of Rathnam?

How Rathnam (2024) ends, in short: the final scene, the last twist and what it means for the characters. The full ending explained, with every spoiler, lives on its own page.

Read the full ending explained

Rathnam’s final act is the culmination of a life haunted by the brutal loss of his mother, Loganayagi. After serving time for avenging her humiliation, he re‑enters the world as a loyal aide to MLA Panner Selvam and as a self‑appointed guardian of women. When he meets Malliga—a bright nursing student whose face mirrors his mother’s—he is struck by an almost supernatural recognition. That resemblance compels him to treat her as the living echo of his lost mother, and he vows to shield her at any cost.

The conflict erupts over a parcel of land that Malliga’s family refuses to sell. The Rayudu brothers—Beema, Raghava and Subha—have already used the same land to settle old scores, brutally killing the bus passengers in 1994 and later murdering Loganayagi’s husband. Now they want to turn Malliga’s land into a lucrative private medical college, while Malliga demands that the institution be a government college, a condition that would ruin their ₹200 crore scheme. The brothers threaten both Malliga and Rathnam, hoping to force a sale.

Continue reading the ending (3 more paragraphs)

In a tense showdown ordered by the police, Malliga offers to relinquish the land only if the college becomes a public one. The Rayudu brothers, furious, plan a final ambush. Rathnam, driven by the twin fires of personal vengeance and his promise to Malliga, confronts the gang. With a dagger in hand, he slaughters the three brothers, dismembering them and scattering the pieces through the town so that no one can forget the price of cruelty.

After the blood‑soaked climax, Rathnam does not run. He walks to the police station and confesses every homicide, accepting the inevitable punishment. His confession is not a cry of defeat but a release; he finally settles the debts of his past—both the murder of the brothel owner who shamed his mother and the killing of the Rayudu brothers who destroyed his family.

Malliga, having witnessed his ferocity and grown to love him, learns that her resemblance to Loganayagi was the very reason he fought for her. She chooses not to burden him with her feelings, respecting his self‑imposed role as a protector rather than a lover. In his last moments of freedom, Rathnam asks only one thing: that if Malliga ever has a child, she name the baby Rathnam so his name will endure. His desire to be remembered becomes the quiet, poignant echo that lingers after the violence subsides.
