Ralph, voiced by John C. Reilly, and his best friend Vanellope Von Schweetz, played by Sarah Silverman, have shared a strong friendship since their adventurous escapades six years earlier. Spending their evenings together at Litwak’s Family Fun Center and Arcade, Ralph is satisfied with his life, but Vanellope feels stifled by the predictability of her racing game. Eager for change, she expresses her desire for excitement.
In an attempt to surprise her, Ralph creates a secret bonus track for Vanellope to try during a race. However, when she takes control and the game struggles with player input, they accidentally break the steering wheel. Unfortunately, as the company that manufactured Sugar Rush is no longer operational, Mr. Litwak, voiced by Ed O’Neill, discovers that replacing the wheel is far too costly—leading him to unplug the game and ultimately, making its characters homeless.
Determined to help, Ralph consults Jack McBrayer’s Fix-It Felix Jr. that night. Inspired, he and Vanellope decide to venture into the Internet through the new Wi-Fi router that Mr. Litwak installed with the goal of buying the new steering wheel on eBay. After successfully winning the bidding, they face an urgent problem: they must acquire the funds within 24 hours. Turning to a pop-up advertisement agent named Spamley, they take on a risky job to steal a car from Slaughter Race, driven by the formidable Shank, portrayed by Gal Gadot.
During their heist, they encounter Shank who commends Vanellope’s skills, hinting at a partnership. Following this, Ralph and Vanellope connect with Yesss, voiced by Taraji P. Henson, who leads them to BuzzzTube, a video-sharing platform. Here, Ralph realizes that creating viral videos could generate the money they need to save their home; thus, they plunge into the realm of trending videos.
As Ralph’s videos become a sensation, Vanellope immerses herself in Yesss’s promotional efforts, leading to a bittersweet realization for Ralph. He persuades Yesss to send Vanellope to a Disney fan site. There, she encounters an array of Disney Princesses, with appearances by voices like Jodi Benson as Ariel and Idina Menzel as Elsa, who inspire her to confront her feelings of restlessness. However, Vanellope’s joy fades when she confesses to Shank her wish to remain in Slaughter Race, relishing its unpredictability.
Distraught over the thought of losing Vanellope, Ralph looks to Spamley for a way to make the game less enticing. Spamley introduces him to Double Dan who provides an Insecurity Virus to exploit any shortcomings in the game. When the virus is unleashed, it causes chaos, manifesting Vanellope’s glitch as a result, and triggering a server reboot that endangered Vanellope’s existence.
As Vanellope mistakenly believes she caused the catastrophe, Ralph, filled with remorse, reveals his role in her troubles. Hurt by his actions, Vanellope discards the medal she once crafted for him. In a frantic attempt to reclaim it, Ralph becomes overwhelmed by the Insecurity Virus, leading to the creation of destructive clones that pose a significant threat to the online world.
In a dramatic showdown, Ralph finds Vanellope, and together they collaborate with Yesss to thwart the clones by guiding them toward anti-virus software. However, the clones merge into a gigantic entity, putting Ralph at a severe disadvantage. When Vanellope intervenes, she willingly sacrifices herself, but Ralph cannot accept this. By confronting his insecurities, he assures the automaton that their friendship will endure despite any physical divide.
With Ralph’s transformation, the clones dissolve, allowing the Internet to stabilize, and Ralph is miraculously saved by the iconic Disney Princesses. In an act of kindness, Shank offers Vanellope a chance to continue in Slaughter Race. Ralph gives her half of his now-broken medal, a token of their friendship, and returns to the arcade, embracing his newfound independence while remaining connected to Vanellope through video chats as Sugar Rush is revived.
