Racing with the Moon

In the picturesque setting of Mendocino County, California during the 1940s, Henry “Hopper” Nash (played by Nicolas Cage) is a small-town youth facing the inevitable as he gets drafted into the United States Marine Corps. With only six short weeks before his deployment overseas, he spends this precious time with his best friend Nicky, who is also preparing to embark on the journey of service.

Their everyday lives revolve around the local bowling alley, where Henry engages in various tasks like setting pins, polishing the lanes, and assisting customers at the front counter. It is there that he first catches a glimpse of the alluring Caddie Winger, a charming young lady who collects tickets at the nearby movie theater. Captivated by her beauty, Henry devises a plan with a younger boy to shower her with flowers, hopeful that his romantic gesture will win her heart. His efforts bear fruit when Caddie unexpectedly drops by the soda shop where Henry and Nicky frequently hang out. Seizing the moment, Henry impresses her by vaulting over the counter and pretending to serve.

Despite Caddie’s cryptic nature that intrigues Henry further, he decides to follow her home, expecting her to be a wealthy “Gatsby girl.” However, his illusion shatters when he learns that she actually lives in that large mansion because her mother works there as a maid. Undaunted by this revelation, Henry remains determined to pursue her and soon spots her at the local library. Although Caddie initially turns him away, his perseverance pays off when he manages to arrange a date with her.

As Henry navigates his budding romance with Caddie, Nicky is dealing with complications of his own; his girlfriend Sally Kaiser is pregnant with his child. Faced with the urgent need for $150 to cover an abortion, Nicky mistakenly believes that Caddie, who he perceives as affluent, can help them. In an attempt to be resourceful yet ill-conceived, Caddie schemes to steal a pearl necklace from Alice, a resident of her opulent home. After being caught, Caddie has no choice but to confess her intentions and borrow the money from Alice instead.

As the weight of their respective dilemmas mounts, both Henry and Nicky find their friendship strained by conflicting views on how to address Sally’s pregnancy. Nevertheless, they soon come to understand that their bond is essential in facing these challenges. Similarly, Henry and Caddie experience their own misunderstandings, which momentarily jeopardize their relationship. Yet, they ultimately reconcile, sharing a heartfelt farewell before Henry’s departure for military service.

With the grim reality of heading into battle fast approaching, a palpable sense of dread settles in among the young men. As they stand by the train tracks, a bittersweet heaviness cloaks them while they watch the train that will take them away from the comforts of home slowly appear on the horizon. The atmosphere is thick with apprehension as they prepare to make their move, their gazes locked on the approaching locomotive. With a surge of youthful energy, they leap onboard, their hearts racing in time with the rhythmic chug-chug-chug of the train as they claim their seats for the tough journey that lies ahead.
