She was the wife of a king and the lover of a soldier. On August 18, 1572, in Paris, the fragile peace between Catholics and Huguenots hangs in the balance. To avert a religious war, the Catholic princess Marguerite de Valois, sister of the ailing King Charles IX, is wed to the Huguenot monarch Henry III of Navarre, uniting the two opposing houses.
