Although Brantôme is occupied with his duties as a soldier, he devotes far more time to flirtations with the ladies of the 16th‑century French court than to actual combat. His genuine affection for Victoire remains largely unfulfilled, leaving him to seek consolation in the embraces of numerous other women.
