Ten years prior, a young boy named Nick was in a hotel with his father, Joel Gretsch. His father imparted a cryptic yet important lesson, stating that one day a girl would give him a flower and that helping her would ultimately help everyone. Just then, a forceful telekinetic shove sent Nick crashing through a wall, coinciding with the intrusion of agents led by a maid, which culminated in Nick’s father’s tragic death at the hands of the head agent, Henry Carver (Djimon Hounsou).

The story unfolds through the narration of Cassie (Dakota Fanning), who recalls the past events ignited by Hitler’s experiments in 1945 aimed at creating psychic soldiers—a pursuit that continued post-WWII. Individuals are categorized by their psychic abilities: Watchers receive glimpses of the future, Movers can manipulate physical objects, Pushers instill false beliefs in others, Bleeders unleash deadly sound waves, Stitches can mend bodily injuries, Sniffs extract historical information from objects, Wipers erase memories, and Shifters alter perceptions of objects. Among them, Cassie stands out as a Watcher. Unfortunately, attempts to enhance these powers through drugs have resulted in high mortality rates.

In the present day, a young woman named Kira (Camilla Belle) is seen in a government facility struggling against an unknown substance being injected into her while Carver looks on. Upon dropping a glass marble, Kira experiences a harrowing near-death experience but defies the odds by escaping, using the marble to thwart the closing doors behind her. Carver, along with his Mover associate, Victor, realizes that Kira is the first subject to survive and flee with valuable information.

Now a grown man, Nick is immersed in a world of debt after gambling and losing $6,000 on dice. Two agents from Division, Mack and Holden, confront him, revealing that numerous individuals with psychic abilities have fled to Hong Kong to evade capture. Their investigation prompts them to sniff out Kira’s whereabouts but yields no results, cautioning Nick to tread carefully.

Enter Cassie, who unexpectedly visits Nick’s apartment, unveiling a plan to seize $6 million, only to find out that her mother had been captured by Division. Their conversation is abruptly interrupted by an attack from an organized crime family known as the Pop family, comprised of psychics, which forces them to flee. During the ensuing chaos, Nick demonstrates his abilities by successfully Moving Cassie to safety. Amidst the turmoil, Pop Girl—a Watcher and member of the Pop family—has a foreboding vision of Kira disappearing, compelling her to halt the assault on Nick.

Meanwhile, Kira awakens on a boat near the docks, where she recognizes a significant clue: “4100” and “Nick” written in her own handwriting, hinting at her connection to him. Cassie enlists the help of Teresa (a Stitch), who has been instructed by Cassie’s mother to aid them. In a poignant moment, Cassie gifts Nick a flower, convincing him to assist her.

The drama escalates as Mack and Holden manage to locate Kira, only to be duped when she uses her abilities to push Mack into mistakenly shooting Holden. Consequentially, a demoralized Carver coerces Mack to take his own life, illustrating the dire circumstances surrounding them.

Nick and Cassie venture to a club, seeking out former Division agent Hook Waters (a Shifter) to gain intel on the bead—a companion to Kira’s bracelet that could lead them to her. As they unravel the mystery, they discover the bead has been widely circulated among sniffers, intensifying the urgency of their quest.

When they finally track down Kira, Nick realizes she is not only his ex-girlfriend but also someone with pivotal knowledge that could shift their current plight. As the stakes rise, Cassie uncovers a chilling drawing predicting their demise, inciting doubt about whether Kira should be part of their plans. They enlist the help of Pinky, a Shadow, to shield Kira from being detected by their enemies.

Amid the chaos of their escapades and the impending threat of Division, relationships deepen, betrayals occur, and the line between ally and enemy blurs. Nick’s resolve to protect Kira culminates in a reckless decision to confront Carver directly, risking everything to safeguard their future.
