Four friends—Balu, Michael, Raja and Manohar—are street musicians who dream of big breaks despite living in poverty. Balu sings, Michael dances and plays the tabla, Raja strums the guitar, and Manohar plays the flute. They travel the city streets daily hoping one performance will change their lives.

They encounter Gowri, a girl who seems mute, and decide to help her. They assist her in finding an address she is seeking, hoping to aid her. They learn the person she wanted to meet has already left for London and won't return for a year.

Moved by her apparent helplessness, the four invite Gowri to stay with them. She helps around the house while they continue pursuing chances to showcase their talents. This marks the start of a fragile, growing friendship.

To win their sympathy and protection, Gowri pretends to be mute. The four believe her act and welcome her into their circle. Her ruse buys time and safety as they bond.

Gowri is revealed to be the daughter of a wealthy estate owner from Ooty. After her parents died, Vishwam became her caretaker and began plotting to abduct her wealth. The backstory explains why she is wary of others and why she seeks safety among the poor quartet.

Gowri is in love with her schoolmate Suresh, who plans to leave for London for higher education. His impending departure adds urgency to Gowri’s decisions. The four friends sense a possible opportunity as Gowri’s hopes pivot toward Suresh.

Suresh returns from London and life takes a new turn as he reunites with Gowri. She travels to Suresh's home in Madras and their plans for a future together begin to reemerge. The reunion strengthens Gowri's trust, though tensions linger.

Suresh distrusts Gowri’s close friendship with the four poor men and insists on checking her virginity by taking her to a doctor. The embarrassing test shatters Gowri’s sense of safety and trust in him. The couple's tension becomes a central obstacle.

Thanks to Gowri’s old business acquaintance, the four are given an opportunity to perform at a music competition. This chance promises a significant breakthrough in their careers and a way to prove their talent. They prepare with renewed hope and effort.

The four visit Suresh’s home to request that Gowri and Suresh attend the competition, but Suresh refuses and insults them. The rejection deepens the strain between Gowri, the quartet, and Suresh. The mood around the event becomes tense and uncertain.

During the competition, the four perform to their surprise with Gowri found in the audience. After their set, Gowri explains that she has broken up with Suresh because he lacks trust. The moment marks a turning point for their friendship and ambitions.

The four win the competition and secure a chance to compose for a film. Gowri decides to join their troupe as a singer, joining the ranks of the aspiring artists on their journey to stardom.
