In a quiet Tamil village, Seetha leads a simple life with her father, who teaches Tamil at the local school. After Seetha’s elder sister ends her life under the weight of dowry harassment from her husband’s family, the family struggles to find a suitable match for Seetha, hampered by poverty and social expectations. When her father finally meets Ram, a bank employee, he introduces him to Seetha, and after a short courtship, the two decide to marry.
Ram’s mother never accepts Seetha, resenting the lack of a dowry and repeatedly insulting her. Despite the taunts, Seetha endures out of love for Ram, but tragedy strikes when her father, unable to bear the mistreatment his daughter endures, takes his own life.
During a gathering at Ram’s home, Ram invites his boss, Rajasekar, to join them for lunch. Rajasekar is secretly attracted to Seetha, though she keeps her distance and tries to steer clear of trouble.
Meanwhile, Ram’s sister becomes pregnant by Ram’s friend, and both families push them toward marriage. Financial hardship forces Ram to steal money from the bank, and he is caught by Rajasekar, who proposes a terrible bargain: if Ram allows him to have sex with Seetha, he will forgive the theft and not go to the police. Angered by this proposition, Ram beats Rajasekar and leaves the family home.
The following day, Rajasekar is found dead, and Ram is arrested on suspicion of murder. Seetha resolves to help Ram by seeking legal aid, first contacting David, a criminal lawyer and a friend of her father, only to learn that David has moved away. She eventually finds another lawyer for Ram and begins modeling for a painter to cover the legal expenses, also helping Ram’s mother and sister financially. Yet Ram’s mother continues to insult Seetha, accusing her of prostitution.
A painter later asks Seetha to pose nude, an act she finds demeaning and refuses. She expands her earnings by taking on multiple jobs—cooking, cleaning, and other household tasks—to support herself and Ram.
Seetha then encounters David again and pleads with him to appear in Ram’s defense. He confesses that he murdered Rajasekar to avenge his sister, apologizing that Ram was falsely arrested. David appears in court and publicly admits to the murder, clearing Ram.
With Ram freed, Seetha discovers she is pregnant and hopes to share the news with him. However, Ram’s mother sways him to doubt paternity. When Ram questions Seetha, she contemplates ending her life but ultimately decides to leave home and live on her own, choosing independence over an impossible situation.
