A group of stunning young women with striking legs bide their time outside as Kimberly auditions for the role of a French exchange student in a new TV series. During the audition, Kimberly performs a provocative dance and delivers her line flawlessly. However, the evaluators thank her for her effort and dismiss her, claiming, “Thank you, we will be in touch,” before stating, “And leave the shoes because they belong to us.”
Meanwhile, at the illustrious Roxbury Academy—a prestigious Beverly Hills prep school catering to the affluent—Randa, adorned in a hijab, arrives from a car. Kimberly takes the opportunity to inform Randa about the intricacies of navigating the school, but her comments reveal a troubling undertone, as they come off as insensitive and racist. Although Randa remains mostly silent, her shock is palpable. Kimberly insists that she contributes to helping individuals from various backgrounds, all while expressing her relief at being Caucasian.
Eventually, they join Kimberly’s best friend Brittany, who is now dating Kimberly’s former boyfriend Troy. Once in Mr. Anderson’s English class, Kimberly continues her unfiltered advice to Randa, even casually mentioning that her brother was a casualty of the Iraq War—awful information that starkly highlights her insensitivity. Mr. Anderson interrupts, asserting that he is the one expected to speak, and promptly assigns both girls detention.
Emily Klein, a reporter from Channel 33 who typically covers light stories, is eager to persuade Headmaster Meyer to allow her to film at the school for a feature piece that she hopes will intrigue viewers without spotlighting any controversy. Hesitantly, Headmaster Meyer consents.
During detention, while Kimberly is left in a larger room alone, Mr. Anderson takes Randa into his private office. Kimberly catches a glimpse of him fondling Randa’s chin before Mr. Anderson shuts the blinds, suggesting behavior that foreshadows deeper issues.
At home, Mr. Anderson presents his wife, Grace, with a birthday gift—an alluring short skirt, crafted similarly to the ones worn by his students, though the actual skirts at school are more modest. Kimberly is later cast as Anne Frank in the school’s play, directed by Mr. Anderson. Brittany, frustrated at being passed over for the role, is left with no choice but to dye her hair brunette at Kimberly’s urging.
Furthermore, Kimberly’s father, Henry, confronts her about her inappropriate flirtations with Mr. Anderson, worried about how his business reputation may be impacted. Meanwhile, Kimberly’s stepmother, Kathy, assertively insists Kimberly tend to her dog as it is not her duty.
After a shocking incident occurs, Brittany is distraught, revealing that Kimberly has inadvertently lost her coveted role to Brittany. Concerned for her friend, Kimberly vows to take action against Mr. Anderson for what he has done.
During a slumber party with Kimberly, Brittany, and Randa, they discuss what steps to take regarding Mr. Anderson’s misconduct. Randa, who aspires to become a doctor, expresses shame that the other girls might perceive their aspirations as less noble than acting. Even amidst this troubling setting, Roxbury Academy faces its own challenges, including the introduction of a metal detector after a nearby gun-related incident.
Emily finally sees an opportunity to enhance her career when her coverage of Roxbury unveils a scandal involving Mr. Anderson, who faces accusations of sexual misconduct. Mr. Anderson, perplexed by his predicament and insisting on his innocence, is unable to afford top-tier legal counsel. Mr. Nicholl, a fellow teacher and his friend, offers to represent him.
As the trial commences, Kimberly gets on the stand, interrogated about her loss of the Anne Frank role. Flashbacks reveal her and Brittany’s belief that Mr. Anderson and his colleague were eyeing them suggestively. Meanwhile, Josh belittles Randa in front of the group before Kimberly retaliates with a disparaging comment about him, intertwining her distasteful remarks with an offensive stereotype regarding Jews.
Under pressure from Headmaster Meyer, Mr. Anderson is forced to revoke Kimberly’s role due to her unacceptable remarks. As she tries to justify her actions in court, flashbacks reveal her reading a seductive essay to Mr. Anderson, eliciting strong reactions from those present.
Kimberly’s interactions with Josh are calculated—she feigns interest while planning a way to have Josh’s father defend Mr. Anderson. Brittany confides in Troy, unraveling the complexity of her feelings towards Kimberly and revealing how their former relationship affectively unravels.
When Randa reluctantly takes the stand, she shares little, but flashbacks showcase the harsh criticism she received from Mr. Anderson regarding her writing abilities, creating a clash of expectations that weighed heavy on her. Initially, Josh’s father rebuffs the offer to take Mr. Anderson’s case, but ultimately relents.
As the trial moves forward, Brittany finds herself breaking under tough questioning, leading to a shocking confession about how they fabricated the claims against Mr. Anderson. Emily is left infuriated with Kimberly, who jeopardized potential judicial outcomes and undermined victims’ credibility. Meanwhile, Kimberly ominously hints at potentially incriminating footage involving her and Emily, leaving them both at odds.
The narrative reaches a breaking point as the girls are seen departing from school amid media frenzy, their futures uncertain. Despite viewing themselves on television, all of their actions resonate with disdain from their peers, particularly from men who rejected Kimberly in the past.
In a heartbreakingly ironic twist, despite Mr. Anderson’s challenges, Grace leaves him, unable to reconcile herself with the turmoil. Randa’s father lashes out, asserting that their family was not raised to endorse such behaviors, while Henry confronts Kimberly, blaming her for the damage done to his reputation.
In a chilling conclusion, Randa returns to the school under the pretense of retrieving her belongings. As she moves through security, she repeatedly triggers the alarm. With the obstacle of removing her jewelry, her parents deny her the opportunity to remove her hijab. Inside the school, she pulls out a gun and scrawls “We are all sinners” in Arabic on the blackboard, followed by a gunshot echoing off-screen.
As Kimberly watches the aftermath unfold on television, she glimpses the world spiraling around her. Brittany confronts her about asking Josh to defend Mr. Anderson, questioning her motives while reminding her of the past actions of Randa. Viewing a photo of Randa’s brother, Kimberly reflects callously on the casualties of war, expressing no remorse about her actions. As Brittany departs, Kimberly resumes her passive viewing of television, tears streaming down her face, grappling with the chaos she has helped create.
