Set in Kota and Jaunpur, Satyendra “Sattu” Dubey is deep in the grind of coaching for an engineering entrance exam, living in a modest rented house in Kota. After his hard work pays off with a respectable rank of 287th, he returns home to Jaunpur to live with his parents, his elder sister Nupur Dubey, and his grandmother. The family moment is warm, but Sattu’s life begins to tilt as he and his friends head to a cinema to celebrate. There, a clash erupts when a group of politicians tries to snag the seats, and Rakesh Singh, Emraan Hashmi, refuses to back down, sparking a public confrontation that ends with both men arrested. The fallout is swift and confusing, and Sattu finds himself drawn into a web of danger he hadn’t anticipated.

Back at home, Rakesh makes bail and visits Sattu with a plan that feels like a shortcut to success. He pitches a ghostwriting scheme: he’ll pay Sattu to write application essays for college hopefuls, a service that promises roughly ₹50,000 per paper. Emraan Hashmi as Rakesh convinces him that the money will buy him comfort and status, and Sattu plunges in. The money flows, and so does a life of excess—drugs, casual sex, and an ever-widening gap between appearance and reality. The glitter doesn’t last, though. As Sattu advances into college, his world fractures—he is expelled and eventually arrested for drug use. Rakesh steps in again, bails him out, and supplies a forged college degree, even steering him toward a job in Qatar. The illusion grows, but the foundation is hollow, built on deception that will eventually catch up with him.

Years slip by, and a new chapter begins with Sattu’s sister. Shreya Dhanwanthary as Nupur forms a bond with Rakesh, and the two become acquainted in unexpected ways. Nupur reveals her ambition to pursue an MBA to advance at work, a goal that Rakesh further entangles with his own schemes. He assigns a student to draft a thesis for her, and then arranges a covert meeting in her office’s parking lot to discuss forging the document. A sting operation is set in motion, culminating in an arrest for forgery as law enforcement closes in. The case intensifies the tension between old loyalties and new lies, as a web of deceit threatens to topple everyone involved.

In the shadows of these events, the truth about Sattu’s fate comes to light. After his degree is exposed as fake, he is fired and, overwhelmed by despair, takes his own life. The revelation hits hard, and Rakesh realizes with a heavy clarity that Nupur was knowingly—or unknowingly—working with the police, which reframes the chain of choices that led to tragedy. The story unfolds as a stark meditation on ambition, corruption, and the devastating costs of taking shortcuts. It leaves viewers with a sobering reminder that shortcuts can shine briefly, but the truth has a way of catching up in the end.
