Poem of the Sea

A grand Soviet industrial project casts a long shadow over the Ukrainian countryside, promising a bright future powered by a new hydroelectric station while threatening to erase the past. As the construction of the dam nears completion, an artificial sea prepares to swallow the land, placing old villages in the path of inevitable progress. The looming destruction of these communities sparks profound tensions, pitting the ambitious drive of the engineers against the deep attachment of villagers who refuse to abandon their ancestral homes and history.

Into this atmosphere of irreversible change steps General Ignat Fyodorchenko, a man returning to his roots after years of duty and distance. His homecoming is driven by a need to revisit the places he holds dear, prompting him to reflect on the day he left his village. Back then, his youthful ambitions pulled him away despite the pleas of his mother and the collective farm chairman to stay, a choice that mirrors the broader exodus of his generation toward cities and education.

He arrives to find that the massive construction project has drained the local workforce, leaving the village in a state of quiet anticipation. Yet, he is not alone in his return. The village square becomes a poignant reunion ground for former residents who have achieved great things in the wider world—from a celebrated architect and a polar explorer to a writer and high-ranking officials. Summoned by the collective farm chairman, Savva Zarudnyy, these prodigals gather not just to revisit old memories, but to face the somber reality that their home is living its final days before the waters claim it forever.
