On a remote and desolate island called Hirta, a quiet yet significant story unfolds that captures the struggles and changing lives of its small community. The film opens with a yacht passing by the island, and Michael Powell, the director, also stars as the yachtsman, who finds it odd that the island appears deserted despite what his old book suggests. His crew member, Niall MacGinnis, playing Andrew Gray, informs him that the book is outdated and the island no longer has any inhabitants. Despite Andrew’s warning, the yachtsman chooses to land on Hirta, and what they discover sets the stage for the emotional journey that follows.

Upon landing, they come across an old gravestone perched precariously on the edge of a cliff, which sparks Andrew’s memories of a time when the island was inhabited by families living off the land. As the story unfolds through his flashback, we learn about the lives of the islanders, especially Andrew’s close friend Robbie Manson, played by Eric Berry, and Ruth Manson, played by Belle Chrystall, who is also Andrew’s beloved. Robbie, aspiring to explore the wider world, plans to leave Hirta after announcing his engagement to a Norwegian girl named Polly, whom he met while working outside the island. Robbie’s family, especially his father, John Laurie, remains determined to stay, while Andrew’s father, Finlay Currie, suspects that the island’s way of life is coming to an end.

Tensions rise as Robbie proposes that the entire island should consider evacuating and moving to the Scottish mainland, a suggestion that divides opinions among the inhabitants. The community attempts to settle their differences through a daring cliff race — a test of courage and will. Andrew wins the race, but tragedy strikes when Robbie falls to his death, a moment filled with guilt for Andrew. This tragic event and the subsequent emotional fallout lead Andrew to decide to leave the island for Lerwick, on the mainland, seeking new beginnings. During his departure, Ruth, who is secretly pregnant with Andrew’s child, gives birth to a girl months later. The news of the birth cannot reach Andrew in time, as the only communication comes via a driftwood message sent from the island.

The story takes a life-threatening turn when Ruth’s newborn, suffering from diphtheria, desperately needs a life-saving tracheotomy. Luckily, the captain of a nearby fishing trawler, George Summers, manages to rescue Andrew from his journey and bring him to the island just in time to save Ruth’s daughter. With her life secured, Andrew chooses not to return to Hirta, recognizing that their future lies elsewhere. Meanwhile, the islanders face the harsh realities of their environment as crops fail, peat supplies dwindle—the last fuel for their winter—and their way of life becomes unsustainable.

After much debate, the community makes the difficult decision to evacuate Hirta entirely, with Campbell Robson portraying the reluctant and grief-stricken Mr. Dunbar, the Laird. As they prepare to leave, Peter Manson, played by John Laurie, embarks on a risky climb down a steep cliff to collect a guillemot’s egg for a collector’s payment. Tragically, the rope he relies on frays, and he falls to his death. His gravestone is the same one encountered at the beginning of the film, a silent witness to the island’s final chapter.

This powerful story is a poignant reflection on community, change, loss, and the relentless passage of time. Through personal sacrifices and the inevitable march towards progress, the film paints an intimate portrait of a community facing the end of an era, with each character’s journey emblematic of larger themes of survival and adaptation amidst the relentless forces of nature.
