By the Bluest of Seas

After their ship is capsized by a storm in the Caspian Sea, sailor Yussuf, Lev Sverdlin, and mechanic Alyosha, Nikolay Kryuchkov, cling to the wreckage. On their third day adrift, the castaways are rescued by fishermen and taken to a nearby island off the coast of Soviet Azerbaijan, where they are welcomed into the island’s Lights of Communism collective farm. The two men quickly find themselves drawn to a local woman, Maria, Yelena Kuzmina, and their presence unsettles the quiet order of the community.

Maria is revealed to be more than just a resident of the island; she is a leader of the collective. She is delighted to learn of Alyosha’s trade as a mechanic, especially since all of the island’s mechanics have left to serve in the Pacific Fleet. With those skilled artisans away, Maria fears the collective’s fishing operations could falter. Alyosha promises to stay for the entire season, and as the two head off to inspect a motor boat together, a flutter of flirtation lights their budding connection. Yet Yussuf, who has joined them, watches with growing jealousy as the affection between Alyosha and Maria deepens.

As time passes, both men prove their usefulness by accompanying the fishing expeditions that sustain the island community. Yet a subtle tension threads through their camaraderie. Alyosha one day claims a mysterious “heart sickness” and cannot accompany the boat on a voyage. Unable to coax his friend along, Yussuf proceeds without him. That night, Alyosha quietly leaves the island, traveling to a nearby town, and returns with gifts for Maria. When Yussuf discovers the deceit, he condemns his friend in a public gathering, the social fabric of their seaside home strained by a mix of pride, loyalty, and longing.

On their final day at sea, Alyosha confronts his own disgrace and concedes that Yussuf should be the one to marry Maria. Yussuf accepts this seemingly generous turn, but the moment is tempered by the realization that Alyosha has not truly let go of his feelings. An intense argument erupts in the ship’s cabin as the storm outside grows more violent. Maria, who has been on the top deck, is knocked overboard. Alyosha dives in after her, quickly followed by Yussuf, but neither can locate her in the raging waves. In a dramatic turn, Maryia is carried back to shore by the sea, alive and wearing a life preserver, turning what would have been a premature funeral into a moment of hopeful relief.

Back on land, the trio mourns briefly, then shifts to relief and celebration as Maria reappears. Alyosha seizes the moment to slip away with Maria, and he admits his love, only to be met with her refusal. He leaves, saddened, while Yussuf encounters his own heartbreak when he learns that Maria already has a fiancé who is serving in the Pacific Fleet. Maria asks Yussuf to imagine himself being called to serve under commanding officers like Kliment Voroshilov, and how painful it would be to discover that the woman he loves has grown tired of waiting. Although Yussuf’s passion remains strong, he comes to understand the virtue in her fidelity.

In the end, the two men walk toward the sea together, united in their shared sense of loss and loyalty. They are not broken by the events but tempered by them, and they decide to face the future side by side. As they set out to sea again, they sing a ballad about a woman who awaits her beloved’s return, a testament to enduring hope and the resilience of friendship and love in the wake of hardship.
