Plague

Society collapses after a virus outbreak and Evie's group is forced to retreat to an emergency shelter when John becomes separated during an attack. They regroup at the shelter, hoping to wait out the crisis together. Evie and the others promise to wait for John, but the mounting danger tests their resolve.

Bob grows impatient and declares that they should assume John is dead and move to a more permanent shelter. He seizes the group's car, rifle, and supplies, leaving Gary to object and threaten the group's safety. Gary is shot dead by Bob, and Sammy and Marge depart with him, leaving Evie behind.

John arrives later and is furious to find that Evie allowed the others to leave with the supplies. Sammy returns delirious and infected, and John shoots her before she can transform. The group is forced back into survival mode as the undead close in.

John and Evie struggle to survive on their own, but zombies surround them. A desperate John contemplates suicide until a stranger named Charlie appears and saves them. Charlie's arrival gives them a renewed chance at life.

The three slowly begin to trust one another as they share scarce resources. John is revealed to be a former college professor and Evie a schoolteacher, while Charlie presents himself as a family man with a troubled past. They form a rough alliance as they move forward.

Evie remains bitter about John's earlier suicide attempt, while Charlie tries to position himself as the protector and provider. He implies that he can do better for her than John. Evie struggles with dependence, loyalty, and the growing sense that Charlie may be manipulating them.

John suffers a serious asthma attack, and Evie begs Charlie to fetch medicine. Charlie hints that he knows where to find it but will only retrieve it if Evie submits to sex. Desperate, she yields to his demand.

Evie later searches Charlie's belongings and finds evidence that he lied about having a family. John dismisses her concerns at first, insisting they need Charlie to survive, but the doubt lingers. The couple's reliance on Charlie becomes increasingly precarious.

Charlie reveals that he keeps a former lover, now infected, chained in his car to observe. He returns and argues that survival is the only rule, demanding obedience. John surrenders his pistol and watches as Charlie drags Evie into the shelter to rape her again.

A lost soldier arrives and John disarms him, learning of a nearby extraction point. John kills the soldier and then shoots Charlie, who dies soon after. As Charlie dies, he shoots Evie in the arm.

With Charlie dead, his car breaks down near the extraction point and zombies begin to converge. John yells to alert the military forces nearby, urging Evie to move, but she cannot at first. John finally gives up, hands Evie a pistol, and she shoots him in the leg to use him as a distraction while she escapes.

Evie reaches the extraction point on her own as the zombies close in, and John is devoured in the chaos behind her. She carries the weight of the betrayal and loss but is left with a chance at rescue. The ending leaves her to face a dangerous new world alone.
