Ranjan (Soven Lahiri) suspects his wife Seema (Aparna Sen) is having an affair, casting a quiet, uneasy shadow over their home. Their six-year-old son, Pikoo (Arjun Guha-Thakurta), is enjoying a peaceful holiday, discovering small triumphs and toys of a child’s world, until a neighbor’s dog’s bark unsettles him. He shouts out of frustration and is briefly pleased when the noise dies down.

Pikoo then receives a call from Hitesh (Victor Banerjee), who wants to inquire about Seema. Pikoo hands the phone to Seema, who asks Hitesh not to come over, offering no explanation. Pikoo also forms a quiet, affectionate bond with Loknath, his 80-year-old bedridden grandfather, who listens with gentle patience as the boy shares his family’s tensions and begs Loknath not to reveal these secrets.

Hitesh arrives uninvited, bringing Pikoo a gift: a drawing book and a set of sketch-pens. Pikoo eagerly begins sketching and proudly shows his pictures to Seema and Hitesh. Seema suggests Pikoo should go to the garden to draw flowers that match the colors of his new tools, and the boy hurryingly runs off in excited anticipation. After he leaves, Seema mentions to Hitesh that Loknath has suffered a second heart attack and that Ranjan has begun to suspect she has a boyfriend.

In the garden, Pikoo continues to sketch a variety of flowers and spots a white lotus blooming in the pond. He discovers he lacks a white sketch pen and calls to Seema for help. At that moment, Seema is deeply engaged with Hitesh and does not respond. Undeterred, Pikoo tries to finish the lotus with a black pen, but a rain droplet spoils the drawing and he rushes back inside.

He overhears Seema and Hitesh arguing. Realizing he has a new way to quiet others, he shouts "Hush!" once more, and for a brief moment, it seems to hush the room as well.

> Hush!

He hurries to Loknath to show his drawings, only to discover that Loknath has died in his bed. Confusion and fear overwhelm Pikoo as he wanders to the balcony, crying while looking at the ruined image in his hands.

The story closes on a restrained, unresolved note: Seema opens her bedroom door, sees Pikoo sitting outside, and avoids eye contact, leaving the boy to confront the weight of what has happened and what remains unspoken in their fragile family.

Pikoo (1981) Plot Questions Answered – Summary FAQ

Explore frequently asked questions about Pikoo (1981) with spoiler-rich answers covering the full plot summary, major story beats, character motivations, hidden details, and ending meaning. This movie summary FAQ helps explain confusing scenes, plot twists, and narrative decisions in clear, searchable detail.

Q1

Why does Pikoo shout "Hush!" at the dog and later at the adults?

A.

Pikoo uses "Hush!" as his way of gaining control over his surroundings. When the neighbor's dog barks, he shouts and it stops, giving him a small sense of power. Later, after overhearing adult conflicts, he repeats this word believing it can quiet the troubling sounds around him. This reflects his limited understanding that words can manage difficult situations.

The first "Hush!" to the dog foreshadows his later use of the word to silence the adults' argument.

Q2

Why doesn't Seema respond when Pikoo calls for a white pen while she's in the garden?

A.

Seema is busy with Hitesh in a private moment inside the house. While Pikoo looks for a white sketch pen to draw a white lotus he spotted in the pond, Seema is engaged with her lover and cannot respond to her son's call. This moment highlights the emotional distance between Pikoo and his mother, as her attention is elsewhere while he struggles alone.

Seema's unresponsiveness echoes earlier when she told Hitesh not to visit, prioritizing her secret life over her child's needs.

Q3

Who is Hitesh and what is his relationship with Seema?

A.

Hitesh is Seema's lover. He calls the house asking about Seema and arrives uninvited despite her asking him not to come. The film reveals that Seema's husband Ranjan suspects she has a boyfriend. Hitesh brings a gift for Pikoo, maintaining a cordial facade, but the underlying tension in their interaction confirms their romantic involvement.

The phone call early in the film establishes Hitesh's interest in Seema before his arrival.

Q4

Why does Loknath's death affect Pikoo so deeply?

A.

Loknath is the only adult who genuinely listens to Pikoo. Throughout the day, Pikoo confides in his bedridden grandfather about his parents' fights and pleads with him to keep secrets. When Pikoo returns to show his drawings, he finds Loknath dead. This loss of his trusted confidant, combined with his earlier realization that he can control adults through shouting, leaves him overwhelmed and alone.

Pikoo's earlier conversations with Loknath about family tensions foreshadow this devastating loss.

Q5

Why is Pikoo's father Ranjan away from home?

A.

Ranjan is away at work, leaving Seema alone with Pikoo and the ailing Loknath. This absence creates the conditions for Seema's affair to unfold. While Ranjan is working, Seema's relationship with Hitesh becomes possible, and the tension of his potential return (and his suspicion of infidelity) hangs over the household.

Seema mentions that Ranjan has started to suspect she has a boyfriend, hinting at the danger his return poses.

Q6

What is the significance of the white lotus that Pikoo tries to draw?

A.

The white lotus represents purity and beauty that Pikoo cannot fully capture. He lacks the white pen to draw it accurately and then rain destroys his attempt. This mirrors his inability to preserve the innocence and stability of his family life. The ruined drawing becomes a symbol of lost childhood purity by the film's end.

The white lotus appears as Pikoo still believes he can create something beautiful, before the day's events shatter that hope.

Q7

Why does Seema avoid eye contact with Pikoo at the end of the film?

A.

Seema opens her bedroom door to find Pikoo sitting outside, visibly distressed after discovering Loknath's death. Her avoidance of eye contact reflects the emotional distance and guilt within the family. She cannot or chooses not to comfort him, leaving Pikoo alone with his grief and confusion. This unresolved moment captures the film's themes of adult secrecy and child isolation.

This coldness mirrors Seema's earlier neglect when she ignored Pikoo's call for help in the garden.

Q8

How much does Pikoo understand about what's happening with the adults?

A.

Pikoo grasps only fragments of the adult world. He knows his parents fight, he senses tension, and he has discovered he can quiet adults with his shouting. However, he doesn't fully understand the affair, the severity of Loknath's condition, or the emotional complexity driving his mother's behavior. His understanding remains childlike and incomplete, which makes his attempts to cope both poignant and inadequate.

Pikoo's confusions throughout the day accumulate, leading to his emotional breakdown.
