In the summer of 1918 a seventeen‑year‑old orphan named Riyo boards a steamship in Yokohama, bound for the distant islands of Hawaii under the promise of a marriage arranged by her late father’s sister. The film opens aboard the vessel, where the excitement of a fresh start is mingled with the quiet dread of the unknown, setting a tone that is simultaneously hopeful and melancholy.
