Ichikawa’s 1956 adaptation of Kyōka Izumi’s novel Nihonbashi re‑positions the story as a decadent, aesthetic tanbi‑ha work. It follows two rival geisha, Oko and Kiyoha, vying for prestige in Tokyo’s elite Nihonbashi district and the affection of young doctor Shinzo Katsuragi. Their fierce contest turns love into a tragic struggle of wills, exposing the cruelties of fate and the machinations of modern‑era “super‑women.” The film presents an elegant, steely portrait of manners, intrigue, and melancholy.
