After the war ends, a Holocaust survivor and former cabaret singer, Nelly Lenz, returns to a wounded Berlin, carrying the physical and emotional scars of her imprisonment. A reconstructive plastic surgeon attempts to restore her face, but the result cannot perfectly replica her past appearance, leaving Nelly feeling unsettled and disappointed. Her friend Lene steps in to help by securing a new apartment for them, and Nelly learns she has inherited a substantial sum since all her family members perished during the war. Lene proposes that Nelly take the money and the two of them flee to Palestine, where they could find safety and participate in the birth of an independent Jewish state.

Nelly, however, is haunted by the possibility that her husband Johnny might have betrayed her to the Nazis, a suspicion she flatly denies to Lene. One night, she ventures out to locate him and discovers Johnny working in a nightclub called Phoenix. He doesn’t recognize her at first, but he later remarks that she bears an uncanny resemblance to his late wife. Motivated by greed rather than reunion, Johnny asks Nelly to impersonate his wife in order to claim the inheritance she left behind.

Johnny sets in motion a disturbing transformation, steering Nelly toward becoming the living image of her former self before she was arrested. Nelly agrees to participate, adopting the name Esther and concealing her true identity. Lene continues to warn that Johnny’s involvement in Nelly’s arrest cannot be ruled out, but Nelly clings to a romantic belief in their bond. As Esther, she probes Johnny about his feelings for his wife and his actions at the time of her arrest, yet Johnny dodges most questions, insisting that she focus on mastering the impersonation. He tells her that her staged return from the camps is planned within the week and invites a circle of their old friends to meet at the train station.

After several days living with Johnny, Nelly returns to the apartment she shares with Lene. The landlady delivers the devastating news that Lene has killed herself, leaving a note for Nelly. In the note, Lene admits she knew Johnny had divorced Nelly the day before her arrest and even includes a copy of the divorce decree, forcing Nelly to confront the betrayal.

Despite this revelation, Nelly keeps the knowledge to herself, continuing with Johnny and the old friends as planned at the train station. Later, at a friend’s home, Nelly invites the group to listen to her sing, with Johnny accompanying on piano. As she performs, Johnny recognizes her voice and spots the identification tattoo on her arm from the concentration camps. The moment overwhelms him; he halts the music, a deep sense of guilt washing over his features, while Nelly finishes the song and quietly exits.

The film presents a restrained, psychologically tense portrait of memory, identity, and power in the wake of catastrophe, anchored by a stark, intimate confrontation between past traumas and present deceptions. The tensions are carried by a poised ensemble that anchors the film’s quiet, devastating examination of worth, survival, and the price of survival when survival itself hinges on a counterfeit self.
